Working at Ft Meade - where to live?

If this is only going to be a couple years, I'd rent, not buy.

What is your rental budget?

We have quite a few ft Meade families in our neighborhood Off rivers edge road in columbia. Huge variety of home styles and prices. Great park great schools and right near 29 and 32 for easy commuting.

Olney is an OK commute to both locations! 30 minutes to Ft Meade and 60 minutes (on metro) for DC.

OP says her DH might get transferred to the Pentagon.

Bowie and/or something on the other side of the Blue Line might work out, there's several '10' rated elementaries in the Bowie area, and Bowie MS/HS are probably the best general-enrollment schools in Prince George's.

Can the PP tell me a bit about Rockville? We have lived in the DC area before in Alexandria and Arlington. I have this impression in my mind about Rockville that it is very busy, lots of traffic and multi lane roads. That might be TOTALLY off base. Is it a nice suburban community with access to parks, pools, restaurants?

Twinbrook poster again-- there are a lot of different parts of Rockville-- you are definitely thinking about the Rockville pike corridor, which like you said, is crazy and full of traffic. Twinbrook is off of veirs mill road and Baltimore/norbeck road (which is how u get to the fort) Which is not the crazy you are thinking of, but still accessible to it when you want. In our little neighborhood alone, we have 3 parks we can walk to. (Montgomery county has lots of parks, silver spring, too!). Twinbrook has a community center and pool. Tons of restaurants, but more towards "regular" Rockville. Rockville itself has ton of amenities, rec dept and more pools, classes etc. we liked twinbrook because we wouldn't have to take the beltway to the fort.

OP here - thank you, this is so helpful! What zip code(s) so I look at for this area?

OP, we have a 5 bd house for rent in Bowie under your budget if you are interested. It's a great house on beautiful grounds. The elementary school is a National and State BLue Ribbon School. If you are interested, shoot me an email at ozianne06 at yahoo dot com

I would live near ft mead. We live in silver spring and the commute sucks. Not terrible but it makes no sense not to live on base or nearby. They have lots of kids activities, health care, huge commissary, bowling, etc.

columbia - also a great idea

Another vote for Bowie; It is close to Metro, also easy to find carpools to Pentagon and other government facilities
If you have kids in elementary school age, look up Whitehall Elementary.

Cheverly! So cute, and not far from Ft Meade or the Pentagon.

Columbia. I prefer the schools in Howard vs Montgomery.

How close is Fulton to Ft. Meade? I know several Fulton people who work in Ft. Meade.... I though it was a 45 minute drive, at least.

Fulton borders Columbia. Probably under 30 minutes.
