When do you pay tuition?

60% July, 40% December. They have a 10 mo option that has about a $250/200 fee so we opt for the big payments only 2 times/yr. good to plan ahead. THis is our first yr, we paid a deposit (1000?) in the spring to hold the space.

One thing I did not anticipate was payments for DC's private school starting in June (maybe it was July?). At any rate, there were 2-3 months when we were paying both daycare and private school tuition.

We did think about it, thank goodness. Assuming everything works out, we too will be paying for 10 months, starting this May. That means we will be paying for daycare and school for four months (M, J, J, A, maybe part of Sept?) - and we have twins, so everything is doubled. Luckily my partner got a medium sized bonus at the end of last year (totally unusual) and we stuck the entire post-tax amount into an online savings account so we wouldn't even see it. We're counting on that plus a decent tax return (we hope) to help carry us through.

^^PP here. I just reread this and I'm not sure it came out the way I meant it. I was trying to commiserate but I don't think it came across that way and I apologize for that. I meant to say, it occurred to me, too, out of nowhere last fall and freaked me right out. So we started saving specifically for the double payment time and then the bonus came through. So we think we'll be fine.

The other thing that occurred to me is that if we're paying May-Feb, that gives us two months "off" (March, April) but we'll have to set that money aside for summer care, when we'll also be paying double. But at least those months no money actually goes out the door so it can be set aside, as opposed to this first year, when we're still paying daycare.

I'm the PP you quoted. No worries - it came across as a commiseration. Fortunately it wasn't a huge deal for us, but I wanted to mention it because it can be a nasty surprise, especially for families who have younger kids in daycare or, in your case, have twins.
