Michelle Obama's Official Portrait

Mary Todd Lincoln also wore sleeveless.

I think some of you who don't like sleeveless are a little stuck in the past, with the idea that it's "supposed" to be a certain way. How do you introduce "change" when your thoughts of the way it's "supposed" to be is so fixed.

She does look great. She does not look appropriate for an official white house photo though.

Why is it inappropriate? Because she has some skin showing? Is this the Victorian era where women should be covered to wrists and ankles? Or fundamentalist Iran?

Lady Bird Johnson had almost as much skin showing. Was she inappropriate too?

Lady Bird looks very classy in that pic. I LOVE Michelle's dress, just don't think it looks great in that picture. I am not a fuddy duddy or stuck in some other era. Just do not like it for that setting and portrait. Just my opinion which I am entitled to.

OK, can you state specifically what you don't like about it? Or are you going to just keep us guessing?

I read these posts before seeing the picture and feared the worst. I definitely think the dress and pearls make her look classy. Totally appropriate. (Didn't like the non-State of the Union dress, though)

Now, am I the only one who think Michelle has had some botox? (I first notice it around the election). She looks much softer around the eyes. Hey, not knocking it, I do it.

She looks like she is going to cocktail hour - not sure I'd want that image for the history books.

Either get a pair of bifocals or adjust your screen.

Apparently the critics, who are experts in this field, find Mrs. Obama too informal as well. And they certainly know their stuff.

LOL. Well, if the first-lady-portraitologists find it too informal, it must be so.

I didn't see any *experts* quoted. Just a reporter recounting what some Hill staffers said... ?

We are actually looking for experts to tell us she looks ok. Are we serious?

I mean it is just a photo - and for all the lip flapping about her being sleeveless - do we live in Afghanistan now?

Here's a link to Huffington Post with some more First Lady photos. It looks like Jackie Kennedy also work sleeveless. Nancy Reagan looks like a clown.

No, I doubt she has botox - african american women don't need it.
