| Yuzu is a great Japanese restaurant...very authentic. Highly recommend it. |

Is New England style seafood ethnic? I love Freddy's Lobster & Clam Shack.
Guardado's is great tapas. Small, family-owned environment. In terms of atmosphere, it's the anti-Jaleo. That's why we like it. But if you're after polished service, you might find it on the casual side. |
| Gringos & Mariachis has awesome tacos, and great beer and wine lists, served in an incredibly loud environment. If that's your thing. |
| Has Nest gotten better? We had one good visit, then 2-3 very disappointing ones (in terms of quality) in their first year, so never went back. |
| Yuzu is usually pretty good, though our last visit was disappointingly inauthentic. They are also generally outside a $20 pp budget. We typically spend around $120 for two adults, a 5 yr old and a 3 yr old with no alcohol. |

Raku.
I love mon ami gabi but sounds like that's not what you are looking for. Food Wine and Co is very good. If you are willing to go farther afield then Praline. |

Bethesdians..
mmmm....why am I imagining someone put them on a slab of marble and used a rolling pin to roll them flat? |
I don't really care for them. Everything is heavily breaded and deep fried. |
| Raku is good, but get a reservation. It gets very crowded. |
| Most of the places you will find in Bethesda will be just ok, nothing to wow you, so choose a kind of food you like or atmosphere. Nest works well though it is small and can get crowded. Very local, often has bands if you like that, and the food is fine. Food and Wine Co. is basically the same but with a more upscale fell and slightly higher prices. It works fine and you will have a good, though not great dinner, with the downside that the wine side of things is pretty weak. Assagi is closed and Mon Ami Gabi is a chain. Redwood is part of a very small local chain, and that works very well particularly on a nice night when the windows are open. Basically the same as Food and Wine but better location, though it is just off the main strip so you might not want that. Don't overthink it, most of the places are very similar. |

I love Persimmon -- delicious food, quiet, excellent service and off the beaten path (on Wisconsin, just southt of Leland), but I think it might be a little higher than your budget. Right up the street is Markham's -- more within your range, also on the quiet side and locally-owned (as is Persimmon). It's new-ish with quite good food and servers are friendly and eager to please. Indoor tables are near the bar, but it's not a rowdy place -- lots of middle-aged parents from the 'nabe dropping in for a drink with friends. The patio out back is a little louder, especially on the weekends, but would be fine on a weeknight. Overall, it's got a saloon feel, with a pleasant vibe and a menu that's getting a bit more adventurous and interesting.
If you like Indian food, Passage to India would suit you, or Tandoori Nights, which is in "downtown" Bethesda --near Barnes and Noble -- but intimate and quiet, with lovelyl contemporary design. We really love Tandoor Nights -- everything we've had there is delicious and servers go the extra mile. Several PPs suggested Redwood -- yuck. It's underwhelming food-wise, loud and all about being right on the strip. Bethesda at its worst. |
It's much better now. We went a few times for the patio seating when it first opened but were not thrilled. Tried it again in January and now go frequently. |
+1 Their mole was really good. |
| Penang is delicious and never stressful like some of the more crowded places. |
This is the OP, thank you to all who took the time to post! I will look into the suggestions and think one poster had it right that there isn't too much difference and I should not overthink it.
