She's not interested in a big school where there are hundreds of students in a class, but more of a "community" feel on campus.

Are there any medium sized schools with diversity that one could recommend?

Claremont colleges or Harvey Mudd. Great programs and worth private tuition

And damn hard to get into. And I would not necessarily recommend Harvey Mudd for some majors. Very strong STEM. Not so sure it's strong in other majors like Econ.

Most public univs. in CA are huge. If you want medium/small, look into private. But, also, cannot stress enough, look at the school through the lens of what major you want. Different schools have different strengths, and most large companies know which schools have a strong program in the particular field of study.

Also, to the other PP that called SJSU meh... a recent article found that the #1 schools that Apple hired from was... SJSU. Obviously depends on the major, but don't knock it if you have no clue. SJSU has a strong Comp Science program. A lot of companies in SV hire from there.

Depends on your major. For comp science or STEM, look at the Polys: Pomona, San Luis, even San Jose.

For accounting/business, maybe Northridge, Fullerton.

Education: Dominguez Hills (but the area is crappy).

I think Monterrey has some very specific programs as a PP stated.

Sonoma state? Not super diverse but small class sizes.

Csu could be a good choice for certain programs, kids who want to save, and who live in ca. Does not make a huge amount of sense for out of state tuition paying child of a dcum poster, unless we are talking poly for engineering or something. Exception would be if your kid just realllly wants to move to ca!!

Berkeley, for one. UCLA for another. Just about all the UCs are highly regarded. Riverside might be the only exception to that. Santa Cruz is good, but has a unique approach to education so its reviews are more mixed.

If you mean the Cal States, then those already named are pretty good - the two Cal Polys, CSUN, and I think CSU Long Beach is decent, from what I hear.

For community colleges, Santa Monica is one of the best in the country. Orange County CC is also very good with great transfer rates.

I've got my grad degree from Cal State Long Beach in Engineering. That program was good, but that was 20 years ago.

But if your a DC resident you would have to pay OOS tuition wherever your child goes.

For what major or interests? That makes a significant difference.

My knowledge of CSU schools is from 20 yrs ago, and things may have changed, and they've added a few more CSUs since I left the area.

For business: Fullerton, Long Beach and San Diego used to be one of the strongest. I think someone posted Northridge for Accounting. I know a few Accountants that went there. I also know a person who got an MBA from CSU LA, and this person ended up working for a big 5 consulting.

Don't know about Public Health.

What is your budget? And what specifically attracts her to California? Is she a Southern California type or a Northern California type?

Berkeley and UCLA both have excellent public health programs. I don't know anything about their business schools, however.

You probably know there are at least three top-notch public health programs relatively near here: Hopkins, UNC and Emory.

Sorry, I just realized I didn't address any of your size and community-feel issues. Any of the UC or CSU campuses is going to have very large classes at the undergraduate level. You could look at private schools such as Santa Clara, which has a public health program (I don't know how well regarded it is). There are some great small liberal arts and STEM colleges in California but I don't know which ones offer public health degrees. Truly if I wanted the kind of thing your DD mentioned I would consider Hopkins/UNC/Emory, even though they aren't in California!

The past three summers we have been going to California (LA) for vacation and she just feel in love. Nice weather, ugg boots with shirts (gag), beach etc. We've set aside roughly 30k per year for her schooling, but hoping to get some financial aide, although it's not a deal breaker. I was leaning towards UNC, but she felt it was just too big. Haven't thought about the other schools you mentioned.
