I understand why the teachers gave the minority students letters, it is because they are underrepresented. I understand why OP is annoyed, it is because it is creating a rift in the classroom since this act is seen as preferential.

If I was a teacher - I would give these letters to ALL the students in the classroom and then I would phone these 2 parents and also reinforce the benefits of HGC for their kids to them. I think this would be more effective and less preferential, more politically correct too.

Crap. There are many whites that score poorly on these exams...much more so than the number of blacks. On the other hand, those for high SES (regardless of the race or ethnic group) tend to score higher on these tests than those form low SES. The group distinction here is based on SES, zip code, better schools, better teachers, $$$ for tutors and $$$ for prep testing.

And, in fact, I agree with the PP that the HGCs should reflect the general population of MCPS (which was actually 32% white, 27% Hispanic, 21% black/African-American, and 14% Asian, last year). There are lots of ways to try to reach that goal. Why do you assume that the only way to reach that goal is admitting based on race?
