Stop being a lazy and selfish parent and keep your kid home. There are kids/adults with serious medical issues and a common cold could trigger a more serious issue for them. You are extremely selfish.

Good lord, step down. People function with minor colds all the time. And like the PP said above, it's likely not a cold but allergies. They're terrible right now. If you need a plastic bubble for your kid, go buy one.

Its not about your child functioning, its about spreading and sharing germs, that may be no big deal to you but could be fatal to someone else.

I can't believe you're seriously taking this position. This is either a minor cold or allergies. If the spread of germs is going to be fatal to someone else, that person needs to be the careful one, not everyone else in the world. Teach all kids to wash their hands frequently, but staying home for a cold? Um, absolutely not.

You are more contagious before you start showing signs of a cold. You are exposed all the time and don't even know it! Teach your kids to wash hands and/or use hand sanitizer.

A cough and runny nose are constant. A fever means stay home.

and they can last for weeks. Does anyone seriously keep their kid home for 2 weeks because they have a runny nose?

If you're that susceptible to germs, you shouldn't be anywhere near a school.

Fever is the only yardstick. No fever, go to school.

We follow the school recommendations. They don't expect kids with garden variety colds to stay home. I am a stickler about waiting 24 hours to be fever-free, and if my kid feels ill or has so much nasal output that he is constantly snuffling, sneezing and wiping his nose then he will stay home. But regular runny nose/ congestion means he goes to school.

Minor communicable diseases are a fact of life. Kids are better off learning resilience, proper handwashing/not touching face hygiene, working when they're not feeling great, etc. than disrupting their (and our) routines to whine around the house. If you keep your kid home with no fever and they are well enough to eat and play at a near-normal level, they should be at school.

Where do you think the kids who get the colds usually catch them? School. Agree with PP, if you're worried about catching a cold being fatal to your child, bubble them up and home school.

Completely agree. Colds are a normal part of school. It may be different in preschool, but once they get to elementary school, it's understood that they will be exposed. They are also taught how to sneeze (into the arm). I had a medically fragile child... I knew that it was our duty to keep her safe. We didn't expect the entire school to be germ-free for her.

Do you stay out of work with a common cold? Good Grief! Do you have any idea how much school kids work miss because they have a little cough or a bit of a runny nose? Thats a common cold! It is stated a child must remain home for at least 24 hours after fever is gone. It is NOT stated that a child must stay home because of a runny nose.

Maybe you should think about why your kid is so unhealthy that he has a cold all the time. And adjust your lifestyle accordingly.

I'm surprised so many parents are perfectly fine that their kid is coughing and wiping his runny nose all day at school. Uncomfortable and infecting other children.

Agree, colds can last a week or longer.

So you realize you're infectious to other people and they'll probably get sick because of you, but you're too selfish to care.
Americans are not lazy. Just selfish.
