Crossfit - real truth

Anonymous
A lot of my friends think it's really great. It's completely transformed some of their bodies. Of course a few of them have completely gone off the deep end and it's like a cult for them, but hey, they're happy.

I do think there's something to be said for functional exercises vs. weight stations and for not doing the same workout day after day. It's easy to get in a rut and stop seeing results when your workout is always the same.

I do know one guy who supposedly does crossfit pretty religiously and he has actually gotten fatter. I don't quite understand how that happens. So it's not foolproof.

There is nothing magical about Crossfit (and I did belong to one for a while). I quit because it is really expensive versus just going to a gym, and I am motivated enough to go and work out on my own. However, Crossfit is easily cheaper than having a personal trainer. There is a weight lifting emphasis in Crossfit that I like a lot, but I had experience lifting weights. All in all, I think Crossfit is nice if you need help getting motivated to go and/or with technical aspects of lifting. As previously mentioned, a lot of gyms are offering Crossfit-style classes now, so you can do similar exercises.

Also, if it matters to you, most Crossfit places are very "primitive" (and proudly so), so you are not going to have amenities like a shower.

This is the real danger of Cross-fit: you become an insufferable snotwaffle to everyone who crosses your path.

I did it before I got pregnant and really loved it. There was a real feeling of camaradierie and some healthy competition. It really depends on the location though. I am going to rejoin but not at the previous box as that one now skews much younger and much more competitive. Petwrorth Crossfit (which is my neighborhood) offers "she-fit" class which I thnk will be a good way for me to start back into.
