Impressions of Glen Echo Heights?

Artsy, left leaning, progressive, open, liberal, nice is the impression based on the houses. In reality, I don't know anyone who lives there. I used to go to Glen Echo park to take pottery classes.

I love it. It attracts the more hippy, liberal types, nature lovers, and world-class kayakers, so it's a great mix, and super, super convenient to DC via MacArthur. A "gem" of a neighborhood that is still somewhat affordable and close in with great schools. Not a lot of housing inventory, though.

Bethesda = Glen Echo heights
Rockville = Garrett Park
silver Spring = Tokoma park

They or sort silmilar but Tokoma is closest to the city but has the most poor people, Garrett park loses some of its charm being so close to Rockville Pike and Randolph but has amazing homes while Glen Echo is on the edge of booming and very private with great schools. GP has good schools and TP has just OK schools which might actually be better than their test scores let on due to its higher levels on FARMs and ESOL enrollments.

If you like Glen Echo you will love Brookmont if you can afford it.

Brookmont is arguably pricier than GEH mainly because it is much, much smaller. There just isn't the housing stock. Having said that, I would give the edge to Glen Echo. Having spent a fair amount of time in Brookmont, the road noise from MacArthur and Cabin John Pkwy can be meaningful, and the aroma from the sewage line that runs along the canal can get a bit "ripe" in the hot months. But they are both beautiful areas.

Also brookmont is very granola. GEH has a big mix.

Love both Brookmont and GEH. I actually prefer Brookmont for the tight knit community vibe. There's a communal green, playground, field, tennis court, preschool, and non denominational church. I'm not sure GEH has a central community space or feel so it's a little harder to get to know people. But both are very warm, friendly, eclectic neighborhoods and very conveniently located. Both have a mix of conservative and liberal but lean more left than right. Brookmont has easier access to the river and towpath if that's important to you. GEH is a quicker bus ride to FH metro.

Agree but really you can not go wrong with the area just outside the city between mass ave and Clara Barton, really just a charming area. Great schools, easy commute, lovely houses and nighborhoods all enveloped in some of the prettiest topography in the city.

Lived in DuPont from 96-2008 before moving up for the schools. One thing that used to bug me was the good block, bad dynamic of the city. How one could be in a charming area and 150 yards later be in a completely different situation. West bethesda is completely sheltered for the most part having Potomac to the north, Chevy Chase to the east, McLean to the west and Spring Vally/palisades to the south. We bike to Georgetown for cup cakes and catch movies in friendship heights.

Only thing that sucks is the metro is already full most mornings by the time it gets to FH.

We recently looked at a couple of houses on Tuscarawas Road in GEH. Nice neighborhood but we were wondering if that street is one of the busier ones, as it leads directly down to MacArthur Blvd. Anybody know?

We live in GEH and, yes, Tuscarawas is one of the busier streets as it is one of the main roads in the neighborhood. Something to think about if your have small children.

Tuscarawas is a busier road but not anything to worry about. There are speed bumps and cars really only use it as a cut through early in the morning and after work. I know someone that lives on the street with small kids and they say it's no problem.

They are Indian names. Nothing weird about it. Here's a bit from the WaPo:

The streets in Glen Echo Heights twist and turn almost as much as their Native American names: Tuscarawas, Walhonding, Wapakoneta. The names reflect the language of the Algonquian tribe that once lived along the Potomac River and hunted in the "heights" above what is today MacArthur Boulevard.

Here's the full text of the article I just pasted from, which some of you may find useful in describing the neighborhood.
