Crossing Canadian border by land - green card holders

No way would I ever leave the US or attempt to cross any international border without my passport. That just seems so imprudent.

My DH is a green card holder and we don't risk going to another state without green card + passport.
I've seen INS haul people off of city buses who looked Mexican and couldn't produce proper iD.

Anyway, as another PP pointed out, the issue isn't going to Canada, it's getting back into the US. They will want to see their passports and their green cards. Don't risk being detained at the border unnecessarily.

I would just add that the rules might technically be green card + state ID, but you're really at the mercy of the individual uscis agent at the border, and if there's any issue at all, I'd rather have the assurance of a passport than sitting in a customs holding cell for 6 hours while the "supervisor" is called.

We have done this!

You need a passport (from whatever country) AND your green card (to prove your link to the US).
