Oatmeal for breakfast - good choice?

I think it is an excellent choice for health and weight loss (even better if you use steel cut oats and sweeten yourself, rather than the sugary packaged stuff). I agree that protein will give you more 'staying power.' I read about adding a bit of peanut butter and thought it sounded gross. I finally tried in years later and liked it more than I thought. You have to be careful with the amount though, since it is calorie dense.

Totally agree with this. Skip the sweet stuff or the instant stuff. But steel cut oats with berries and milk is an excellent breakfast, and better still if you add some protein and some monounsaturated fat. Try a level teaspoon of almond butter instead of peanut butter (no more--it's calorie-dense), or a few almonds (like ten or so, no more) and some kind, any kind, of low-fat protein: a couple of egg whites or egg beaters, or a half cup of cottage cheese, or a slice or two of turkey, or ideally some leftover salmon or smoked salmon.

Steel cut is better for you (higher fiber, lower glycemic index) but regular rolled oats (not instant) are easier and a little more tasty. I mix them 50/50 and cook like regular oatmeal--they take 5 min. on the stovetop, not half an hour. Not quite as fiber-filled and nutritious as all-steel-cut, but easy enough to make an easy part of my morning.

And the PP who said a bowl of oatmeal is an insulin-boosting shot of carbs doesn't know what he/she is talking about (unless he/she is talking about the sugary flavored instant stuff). It's low glycemic index, has fiber, and is filling -- a good carb choice.

Make a pancake with

1/3 cup cottage cheese
1-2 eggs depending on hunger
2/3 cup of quick oats
Good dash of cinamon

Melt a little butter in a pan whip up ingredients so it's about the same texture as regular batter, then cook and flip. I like mine with fresh berries and real maple syrup. It keeps me full forever way better than a regular bowl of oatmeal.

Enjoy

This sounds really good! Would it work with ricotta cheese instead of the cottage cheese?

Never tried it but probably give it a go and let me know. I'll mix it up next week

I've had this without the cottage cheese and it's really good. I eat it as a treat/dessert sometimes.

I find oat bran keeps me satiated a lot longer. Have it every morning with a banana mashed in, so you don't have to add any sweetener (can do the same with oatmeal), and a big dollop of Greek yogurt on top.

Oatmeal makes me gain weight immediately - sadly. Everyone is different.
