How do you tell if someone is old?

FWIW, among my dc's classmates' parents', I get along best with the oldest mom... and I'm one of the youngest. There are so many things that divide adults more effectively than age.

The hair - it's always the hair. I am 52 and I find it kind of frightening that many in my peer group insist on coloring their hair to the same color and/or streaking combo that they wore in their 30's. You have this young looking color and style, and then the wrinkling neck and eye creases. What is up with that? My hair is going into silver highlights and I am letting it. I just keep it shoulder length, trimmed, clean and straight and wear more moisturizer and less makeup.

They don't seem to know my true age and, thank God for that because once in playgroup one of them said she feels really uncomfortable with older moms...THOSE WHO ARE OVER 40. I cringed. I asked her why. She said she couldn't put her finger on it, maybe she'd feel like she was with her mother. So I'm really feelin' the age discrimination thing among younger moms and wondering how I can hide my age better. I know I should be confidant about my age but if these women won't meet up with me because of my age then I worry it'll impact DC.

That's me, too. A 40-something with a toddler.

Me too-45 yr. old with a 2 yr. old.

At my son's birthday party, I let it slip that I was 45 to my son's classmate's moms-they were in shock. They all thought I was in my early 30s. I'm proud of my age but I also take care of myself and my looks. Never let them see gray roots

Frumpy clothing. I met a lady at the park once who I thought was in her 40's but she was late 20's. She had stretched out sweatpants and an unflattering coat on, no make-up. unbrushed hair (I am also descirbing myself!!!). I saw her again the following weekend and she was dressed a little better and then I could see that she was younger than I thought.

Shall I bring my cane?

I agree about the hands. In fact, I've started using my glycolic peel on not only my face, but also my hands and decolletage. That skin also betrays your age with freckles and moles. It seems to be working. I'm 40.

I know this isn't a thread about how to keep from looking old, but I have to say: sunscreen is your best friend. Along with a nutritious diet, exercise, healthy BMI, and adequate sleep. Creams essentially do nothing. And if you're using a peel, you definitely should be wearing sunscreen.

Sunscreen: check
Nutritious diet: Um...sort of. I like doughnuts and coffee.
Exercise: check
Healthy BMI: uh...no
Adequate sleep: HA!!! Hahaha!

New tactic: I'm going to tell people I'm 55.

You don't have to feel guilty about the coffee... it's good for you. Prevents Alzheimer's and other diseases. Yay!

10:03 here. I hear you about the coffee, doughnuts, BMI, sleep, and all that. My main point was that as far as putting anything on your face to prevent aging, absolutely nothing can beat sunscreen, applied daily.

How old are you? And are you the one who always posts saying that your mom and grandma are the most beautiful women you know and they are wrinkle-free owing largely to slathering themselves in olive oil and getting enough sleep or something like that?
