How do you with full time as a parent of an ASD?

I changed to part time so that we didn't need before or after care. We couldn't make it work with me full time.

I was able to get to know their teachers and sometimes stop problems before they started. It was really hard in other ways.

Both of my dc have been asked to leave (different) schools. This year, they did pretty well at school (knock wood). I think part of the reason is that I have been working very part time. They didn't go to early or aftercare this year. I chaperoned field trips. I was home to keep homework on track.

They don't have to be in day camp this summer, because I'm scheduling my work around them. We don't have any money, but I don't have to worry about them being kicked out of camp. It's a trade off I can live with, for now. God help me if we have a financial crisis.

Oh man, I could not hack working at my dc's school. The whispers, dirty looks, exasperation would have undone me.

I work full-time from my home. My 5 yr old is in school until 3 pm, then I pay for an after school sitter until 6:30 pm. My job requires me to me in the field meeting with clients at least 15 days/mos, but since i don't have a boss looking over my shoulder, I'm able to lie about my whereabouts. I just make sure that any big projects/deadlines are met so I don't get fired. Still, the pressure is huge and I often think of quitting because I feel that I'm not giving my employer what they're paying for and I never feel that I'm able to adequately address the needs of my ASD child. Summer is so hard because my child is out of school. We don't have any relatives that live locally who could help and I can't send my kid to camp because he's so severely affected that he needs one-on-one attention.

What do you do with him for the summer, PP? This stuff is so hard.

Mine with ADHD is just starting summer camp and I'm nervous.

I work FT and have a 2 yr old with ASD. He is currently in a private preschool that is open until 6:30, so aftercare is not an issue. As for therapy, my work is flexible so I can leave early and then make up the time later working from home. I feel very lucky.

11:44 here. The preschool is for NT kids and does not have an ASD program. Because my DS is mild on the spectrum, so far he is not having any problems continuing in the school. The school allows both OT and Speech therapists to come in and work with him, so for now it is working for us.

OP...I just came across this website and thought I'd share it with you. I'm not sure where you're located, but they have an after-care program for SN children. http://www.brighterdaycare.com/home.html
