when do girls start wearing bras?

My daughter asked for bras in fourth grade. She is skinny but has buds. The bras are simple, comfortable stretchy little things I get at Target. Much nice than the canvas-like training bras I started wearing a thousand years ago.

My daughter just wore camis with the built in extra support thing at the bust line until 5th grade. Then training bras in 6th, and we bought her first real bra (as in a cup and band size) near the end of 6th.

My DD started at about 10. Now, she is just 12, and need them for support.

I agree. My younger DD (not quite 9) is flat, but she asked for a cami because she felt odd being the only bare-chested girl when she changed for gym.

Cute, but way too expensive for a size that a girl will almost certainly grow out of in a few months.

As soon as you notice a difference when they are wearing a shirt. When I see girls that need them but are not wearing them I think what are the parents waiting for. Help your daughters.

Thanks! So it sounds like "fake" bras anywhere starting in 3rd grade - middle school, and "real" bras starting around 5/6/7 grade?

My thin 12 year old does not need anything for support (barely showing) but wears a stretchy sports-like bra because her uniform shirt is white and she wants to have some coverage.

When do girls typically start wearing bras/bralettes these days? If I seem to remember the age seems to be more of a social decision as opposed to related to physical/modesty need, and I remember everyone seems to do at once so I want to be prepared.

When they start growing tits.

At this point, if DD wants one before her body needs one, then that's fine and I'd be happy to get her some.

(I know that I got my first bras in mid sixth grade, and pretty much all us girls were wearing them by the spring of that year.)

This. Girls get "breast buds". When they become noticeable, you should have them wear training bras - like little sports bras/small t-shirt things - to help conceal the details of their nipples, otherwise it attracts attention. You don't want some old guy ogling your 11 year old.

Unless they're required for PE or the skin is sensitive because a girl is about to start "showing", camis and training bras are unnecessary and a complete waste of money.

Training bras? Training breadsticks not to sag? Stupid name.

Breadbuds not breadsticks.

I am definitely not a fan of the 'girls develop earlier these days' argument. They do not. People these days tend to think it's okay to dress a 10 year old like a 20 year old and it's not. Girls should start wearing bras when they need them. Not when they want them. It's a step into adulthood that shouldn't be taken too lightly IMO.
