Quinoa-What Do You Add To Make It Better?

Anonymous
I like it with buffalo dressing, left over chicken, celery dice, and blue cheese.

Leftover if plain, I like to add sliced almonds and raisins and drizzle with honey or maple syrup for a snack.

Butter! Salt!

I recently used it in place of pasta in Ina Garten's roasted vegetables with orzo recipe. It was very, very good.

I eat it for breakfast with butter, milk and brown sugar.

Your quinoa is bitter because it wasn't rinsed well enough before cooking. Quinoa has a bitter, soapy-tasting coating that is water soluable, but you have to rinse it thoroughly..

Use a fine-meshed sieve to rinse. Alternatively, you can buy pre-rinsed quinoa.

Yes, you're the only person who knows quinoa needs to be rinsed well. Some people just have more sensitive palates.

Saute onions and garlic. Add pine nuts, toast for 5 min. Then add quinoa and liquid (water or broth). After it's done add chopped parsley, salt and pepper. Optionally add a pinch of curry powder before adding quinoa to bring up flavor and aroma. Substitute pine nuts with cooked beans if you like. Just experiment.

+1. I also like making patties out of it and sautéing in oil until crispy.

I've eaten quinoa for so long that I've forgotten that others may not like it. I served it to my meat-loving I laws the other day. Wonder if they hated it too? Whoops!

I like to use a vinaigrette on mine - the same as I would use on a green salad. It's delicious that way. I wasn't a fan of quinoa (rinsed or not) prior to this discovery.

OP here-tried that. Learned quinoa do not make patties that stick together even with egg and breadcrumbs. Next time I'll try adding ground beef. Otherwise, your recipe sounds quite yummy. For quinoa.

Cook in chicken or veg broth instead of water

We only eat it because DD can't have gluten. Otherwise, I avoid it like the plague. I find it least disgusting in a salad. DD likes it as a breakfast cereal with honey and choppped nuts.

The key is to cook it in chicken broth and add a tbsp of butter to the finally minute. We also add frozen mixed veggies and pine nuts.
