So are there any hidden stories not told? Poor report cards or behavioral problems? Why did your child take the WISC at the first place? Most kids take it for appeal THIS MONTH.

Agree. What was NNAT? What was CoGat (listed by sub-section)? What are report card grades? The committee is supposed to look at multiple factors when determining eligibility.

We have moved to Fairfax County and did not have the other tests done and when applied were told is better to take WISC since nothing else was in the file. No behavioral issues, report card is also good. The one from last year was submitted with all high marks. The GBRS was 8 (all 2/4) but with great comments from the teacher.

I did look at the other threats and appeal resuts from last year and was surprised to find out WISC 147 was in all cases had found eligible. Also, is there a rule to submit WISC only for appeal? Wouldn't make too much sense, but this like a pattern. Is there a reason for it?

With no other test results and a GBRS of only 8, maybe the committee thought the kid had been prepped for the WISC. If you want to appeal this year, you should seriously consider paying for some additional testing to support the WISC results. The parent information packet lists what other tests are acceptable. Otherwise, wait until next year to do a parent referral, have FCPS administer the CogAT and NNAT this fall if he's in public school, and hope the GBRS is higher next spring.

Thanks for the info. What are tests are out there? Can you please recommand one? Where do I fond the parent information packet? thx a lot.

WISC 147 is FSIQ 147 right? Isn't that 99%-tile? So hard to believe that alone isn't enough.

Planning to appeal with SB = 132 & GBRS=8, not sure where this falls in terms of eligibilty, any ideas?

GM all

Its that time of the year...and I have been following the threads closely...wanted to send a quick note...my very first one (along with a few questions of course .

DC - Grade 4 now, appealing for Gr 5 /Sept 2014 school year for the first time.
CoGAT Composite (taken in Oct 2013) - 135
GBRS- 12
SOL - Pass Advanced/Proficient which ever is higher in all 4 exams in Gr3.
Ecart Tests - 95% correct most times.

Found not eligible in April 2014.

Then we did the WISC4 last week at GMU- GAI 133 (99th %ile). FSIQ - 127 ( low cos the 2 batteries for speed and processing was a high average and not superior). The first battery for verbal was at 140 (99.6 %ile) There were 3-4 17's. A few 16's.

a) What are the chances ?
b) GMU didn't give us the FSIQ ? Should I go back to GMU and get the FSIQ for him? Will our school system accept just the GAI plus the details of the subsets.

We are in the process of writing up the letter/collecting work samples etc. Any thoughts on the above 2 questions will be appreciated.

Please advise. Thanks

10:33 -- I'm no expert, but your child is one of the few on this board who seems like a pretty strong candidate (on the appeals or parent referral). Good luck. I hope it works out for you. I'm a bit surprised that he/she wasn't accepted this year.

I am the poster from 10.33. Where do I collect the work samples from ? Do I grab something from home that my child wrote/drew ? Or do I ask the teacher for some samples ?
Please advise.

With the original application we sent in things my child had done at home or for school that were impressive. For example in kindergarten he wrote a very large book. We had taken a picture of him that year with all the pages of his book surrounding him. Then I wrote a caption under that picture describing the picture. My child has also participated in the science fair at school every year since K. We had pictures of my child each year in front of his project, so we included that as well. Remember you can always shrink stuff down to fit the requirements. For example if your child has written a story but it is more than five pages you could shrink the story down so that they fit in the five pages.

Hi there. Thanks 13:42 on seeking the additional clarification. We know what the FSIQ is for our ref. BUT GMU did not use the FSIQ on the final report card and used the GAI instead. My question is - will our school system accept GAI ? Will they raise an alarm since the GMU report didn't have the FSIQ ? ....essentially are they used to seeing GAI scores without the FSIQ scores on the wisc report.

Just send in the paperwork that GMU gave you. FCPS is familiar with GMU's work and will accept the format they gave you. Good luck!

+1

FCPS is quite familiar with GMU's work. The appeals committee will know how to read the report.
