Powell vs. Stokes

God, no question I would go for Stokes. There is hype about Powell but people need to remember that one or two years ago, most people hadn't heard of Powell, and many said "no way would I send my kid there." Has it really, significantly, substantially changed so much, beyond kindergarten? Stokes has better scores and a proven reputation.

Stokes is popular because it's one of the more established language immersion schools. But the scores aren't that
great. Only 55% are proficient or advanced for reading on CAS and 45% for math. http://issuu.com/pcsb/docs/dcpcsb_pmf_2013/139.

Powell is about the same and rising, with more families coming in than Stokes, where siblings take nearly all the seats.

But given the long-term prospect of DCI, you have to wonder whether long-term it truly is a better option to do Stokes if you were to actually have the choice between the two. I think this PP has a point, and I think reasonable people could make different decisions on these schools based upon commute and concern about long-term prospects.

It says 66%

that is the summary assessment, read about the individual testing and you will see it is 53.8% or something for that category

I think it says 63.7 for reading and 70.5 for math. The 55.4 is for growth over time.

Thanks PP! Also, given the high % of FARMS I must say that is very impressive for Stokes.

Stokes hands down. We have friends whose children go there and in addition to speaking French they get lots of good club opportunities i.e. chess etc. The drive is not that bad taking Harewood or Irving over to NE. Invested parents, DCI track, it is a solid choice.
We were inbound for Powell and opted for Barnard. At the time 3 years ago the school had terrible test scores although the demographics were similar to Barnard. The gentrifiers are moving up out of Columbia Heights/Adams Morgan, but like Bancroft in Mount Pleasant the school performance lags newcomers expectations considering how much they spent on housing. I wish the very best for Powell don't get me wrong. But Stokes is a safer bet.

I'm guessing you would choose MV or over Powell eventhough they haven't reached testing grades? What about LAMB?

^^When will MV have testing? Will be interesting to see how they do.

Since they are only 33% low income and 27% English language learners, I'm sure they will do quite well.

I wonder why MV and Stokes have such a difference in low income percentage?

When Stokes first opened, it specifically targeted low income students.
