Lorelai/Lorelei -- Respectable name vs. Do meanings and associations matter?

Anonymous
I don't think that Lorelei is nearly on par with Jezebel or Medusa or something. I doubt most people know the story or would associate the name. I think Lorelei is a fine name, and there are lots of nickname options, like Lori or Rory, if she wanted to use one. Go for it.

Sure, but all that is, is a reason to not use the name David. Unless you think it's somehow Bathsheba's fault that David wanted her and decided to kill Uriah to get her? Biblical slut-shaming, what fun.

I know a 3-4yo Lorelei. I think her parents got it from GG also.

My own personal first thought, when I hear of the name, is also of GG and I personally think, "Huh, why would you want to name your child after a character in a tv show?" Seems a little down-market to me (sorry), but oh well, maybe they don't like the name I chose for my DD too! To each his own!

She'll probably be nicknamed Lori.

Right. Because there were no Loreleis/Lorelais before Gilmore Girls and every one born after 2000 is GG inspired.

I hate this train of thought and it's not really fair. I have a child with the same name as character from a popular tv show and everybody asks me if that inspired his name. I'm like, no. He was born 2 years before the show even started.
And even if it had been my inspiration, so what if we heard the name and liked it. Doesn't mean anything.

+1.

And it's really only people our age who will think of that.

Sorry. It is what it is. My DD has a name that inspires reactions in people that are different from the reaction I personally have, and we all just have to live with it.

Yeah and that's fine. Reactions are reactions, but it would be nice if people could manage not to be demeaning to people by using words like "down market," and in other threads, "trashy." Maybe keep it to yourself. There is absolutely nothing to be gained except ugliness by that nonsense.

I really loved GG and thought Lorelai was a good character, so I only have position associations.

I've never seen Gilmore Girls. The name reminds me of Marilyn Monroe's character in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.

Could you see the name Lorelai/Lorelei as that of a professional woman?

Is it a Delilah where people like the name but dislike the association?

I always will associate this name with the character Marilyn Monroe played in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes."

It is a beautiful name and it matched her perfectly.

I always associate Lorelei with the siren myth. It's a beautiful name, but I'd never want to burden anyone with those associations.
Anonymous
I like it and wasn't familiar with any of those associations.

Bathing naked on her roof in a clear line of sight from David's balcony. The man was a notorious womanizer. What did she think would happen? Why couldn't she just go to the mikveh like her neighbors?
