Why does FCPS SACC have such a long waiting list?

Think about it, the waiting list is 18 months long and you can only sign up 18 months in advance. Most SACC don't have any Ks.

You can sign your K up for SACC 18 months before they enter school. Just like some of us signed up for the good daycares before our DCs were even conceived.

Not quite right. You can sign up the July one year prior to starting school.

It would be very profitable for the county and parents would definitely pay for it.

The list is so long right now that no kindergartners are even in SACC.

No more classroom space.

This.

It's basically subsidized childcare, and there are a ton of people, mostly immigrants, who are in desperate need of low cost childcare.

You must mean illegal immigrants. The legal immigrants are usually here working on a visa, with an embassy or similar, and are comfortable financially. Many of them are from Asia, the Middle East, some Europeans and Australians, and some South Americans.

If you mean the ILlegals from, say, Mexico, working for farms, landscapers, house cleaners, restaurants, I couldn't care less.

There are at least 5 or 6 kindergarteners at our school, including my daughter. When we called to sign her up, we weren't waitlisted- got a spot immediately. Other friends either got in right away or were waitlisted initially and got in before school started. In our neighborhood, there are a lot of sah parents so I don't think demand for sacc is that high.

Not necessarily. Back 5 years ago when there was half day kinder, I was 10th in line to sign up at 7AM, was #3 for after K SACC and 138 for afterschool SACC at my non center school.

Which school?

Unfortunately, I don't think that's the case. DC will be going to Vienna Elementary (small school). We were placed on the waiting list last July and her number on the list was in the 60s. I recently checked with SACC and she is now in the 30s. However, there's a good chance she won't get a spot in the Fall. Frustrating because the after school options for that school is very limited. I wish there were private companies that provided after school care at the school. This would definitely help reduce the waiting lists. The schools can charge the company rent. This way, they open up spaces.

The SACC list moves quicker for schools with a high mobility rate (students coming/leaving) and it typically moves quicker for morning than afternoon.

SACC is great for those of us that both work outside the home...who are desperate for childcare, preferably low cost.

SACC is ONLY for those of you that work outside the home for 30 hours or more each.

My eldest is in 11th grade. When he entered Kindergarten at Chesterbrook (~500 students at the time) there was a 2 year waiting list. ~80 slots for over 500 kids was not enough as there were no stand alone b/f facilities within Chesterbrook's cachement area and very few home daycares (if any). Now, the the Methodist Church down the street runs a B/A program, but SACC still has a waiting list as the school has grown. Based on comments from neighbors, we need another church to open its doors.

The karate place off of Church Street, Mt. Kim, has after care and pick up.

Everyone I know who registered the first day they could for Vienna Elementary SACC got in at the beginning of the year or shortly thereafter. A couple of months isn't a big deal. It's places like Haycock where the waitlist is 5 years to get into SACC. By that time your child doesn't even need SACC anymore.

Merritt Academy also picks up from Vienna Elementary
