Sure these various things may help some, but considering the lack of decent research, I no longer am willing to pay to please the interventionist. I make it clear we aren't rich and we don't want a constant sell.

Sometimes good interventionists rest on their laurels. I'm not referring to normal period od plateau where kids aren't improving, but I'm talking about the therapist who starts later and later, but ends on time. Within 30 minutes of the 50 minute hour therapist is writing the progress notes. Then she takes a phone call. She leaves your kid bouncing his tush on one of those bouncy things while she chats with a colleague who comes in. I'm paying for the 50 minutes. If you need to jot down notes as you go that is fine, but I am paying for you to work with my kid, not take phone calls. If you are going to start late, then end late.

Why are you putting up with this? Stop doing a slow burn and find someone else who acts professionally.

I went through several providers for speech. Just email and tell them you are taking a break and find someone new.

On take away for me from all this is that therapists will rarely end something when its not really working. You can look at it as bad or disgusting business practices, or you can look at it in a more charitable way. But in the end, it really is up to us to take that step.

Trying things and making mistakes is part of solving any problem.

Yes, from the sound of this it seems it wasn't necessarily that the therapy is a waste of time, it's having the wrong therapist.

True. I just wish it wasn't so expensive...

I know, that part is hard. But you certainly learned something about your child and about what kind of services he needs. One day you will look back on this, after your child has made great progress, and you will say this was a false start, that you had to start somewhere and that ultimately you found the right path. Don't be defeated. I can't tell you not to feel frustrated at the sacrifice you made to pay for all of this. But pick yourself up and move forward. You have the strength. God Bless.

So many of us have been there, and felt the financial pain. But other than moving on, there's really nothing to be done about it. With one exception - if a provider did something negligent or inappropriate, if you were overcharged for something, if there was fraud involved, etc, then by all means, I would pursue getting your money back. But if it's something you understood and agreed to, then, well, the money is gone. Channel that emotional energy of regret into something more productive (i.e. having a solid financial plan to recover, ensuring that it doesn't happen again, finding cheaper ways to help your child, pursuing insurance coverage, etc).
