Arties!! For a once in a lifetime event I can't think of any restaurant in nova that qualities BUT for a very nice evening and an excellent meal always, Arties.

O please. First of all, they don't take reservations, so your "very nice evening" will begin with a 40-minute wait. Also, the OP wanted to "try something new", and you just do not go to any GAR for that. They all have the same menu, which granted they do well, but if you have been to any GAR once or twice, the novelty is gone.

If I went to Arties for my birthday, I would be very disappointed. As a PP said, it is the exact same food as any other Great American Restaurant. Nothing really special but nothing really bad.

2941 is fabulous.

For a serious blowout, 2941 or Restaurant Eve.

For delicious but not over-the-top, Bistro Vivant.

I love GAR, but we can go with our kids.

Bellissimo Restaurant in Fairfax City- they have a waiter that sings happy birthday named Enio- adorable! The staff came and sang with a piece of tiramisu on my DH's b-day.
