Ha! Same here! But, we also have a great watch dog, standard locks, and deadbolts. Have lived here 26 years and never had any kind of problem. |
Two dogs, a husband who is a combat veteran, smoke and CO detectors. Family herilooms are in a safe deposit box.
No one unlocks the door for a stranger. The few times we felt the need to talk to an unknown person who came to our door, my husband went out the back door and talked to them in the front yard. I don't see much use in alarms. If I am not home, I don't care if someone steals everything, that is why I have insurance. If I am home, how likely is it that I can get to the panic button on the panel? And if i do, by the time the alarm company calls my home and mobile phones, dispatches the police and they arrive, whatever is happening will be all over. |
If you're not home and someone breaks in, they could lie in wait for you to return and then assault you (or worse). I don't think insurance covers that. |
A determined person will not be dissuaded by a dog. |
A thug can take a dog out with one swift kick, a bullet, or some poisoned meat. So not rely on a dog to save you. Yesterday on another thread someone mentioned that show where reformed burglars break into someone's house, ransack it in a matter of minutes and almost every time the dog did NOTHING and the homeowners who are watching on cctv are always so surprised that kujo is not the great protector they thought he was. |
that's why you set the alarm when you go to bed. If someone breaks in the alarm goes off and you don't have to push a panic button. The entering the door did it for you. That's the point. |
Just smoke and CO detectors. We don't even lock the doors. |
Guns, lots of guns. An alarm system too. |
Hope your guns aren't locked up in a safe and/or kept without bullets in them. |
It's true that it might all be over by the time the police get there, but the sound of the alarm going off could be a huge deterrent. We have neighbors who are home during the day who would definitely be coming out to see what was going on. I always set the alarm when I'm home or alone with the kids--I want to know if one of them walks out the door as well! |
A very scary looking, aggressive dog. |
If I were going to rob a house and heard a dog barking, I would not rob that house. |
Do you live in/around DC or in Canada? ![]() |
Unless you had a gun and meant to do more harm than simply robbing the home. |
