Stopped watching about two years ago. This is my theory on these shows. First of all, none of it is reality- it's all a bunch of producer set ups devised to showcase events and behaviors.
The first season of any of the shows is the closest to any kind of reality- if you don't count the fact that the events are planned by the show, and the relationships between the women are also contrived, and don't forget the heavy editing, the cutesy music around comments, etc. After the first season, however, everything deconstructs because the housewives have seen themselves and they don't recognize themselves- they are looking at what basically have become their avatars. That's when they start to manipulate their own reality- they begin with changing their avatars- the plastic surgery, the face fillers, the hair, the makeup, the clothes. They actually look costumed. Their avatars begin to manipulate each other's avatars, the conversation becomes contrived and competitive, and they are pressured by the producers to create drama in order to have face time on screen. They lose themselves as people entirely, and yet they have little control over their own lives. What we end up watching are people slowly spiraling out of control because they cannot synthesize their actual selves to the perception of themselves. They are not trained actors- and even trained actors have trouble with this aspect of reality and fantasy- but let's understand this- at least the actors understand that they are working with a script- they may get lost in it, and they might even believe their own crap, but these women have no script, just a perception. They also feel pressured to do something else in order to capitalize on their fleeting fame- a clothing line, Skinny Girl drinks, whatever business they are already in. They can no longer have personal relationships, and sooner than later, they might start figuring out that they have been exploited by the show for their weak points, because that increases ratings ( people love a table flip or an argument) so they are left in the cold with a large baggage of emotional loss and low self-esteem. This isn't entertainment. These are tragic shows. |
Kandi's mom is the worst. She is so grating, unsophisticated, and pathetic. I feel so bad for Kandi. |
The voicemail she left for Kandi's assistant that they played on last nights episode... ![]() |
Wow! This is great just slip in some post modern theory on performance and you have a Master's thesis in media studies. |
They're all extremely vile, especially the old hags who have had too much work done. They're just gross to look at.
Kandi is the least vile and seems normal despite her crazy mother. She has kind of a dull personality though. |
They are all terrible. But in a weird way, I have more respect for the crazy ones. Vicki, Ramona, Kim Richards, Kenya. I mean, they are so delusional. All in all, they make me feel really good about myself : ) |
Wow, I feel like I need either a drink or cigarette after reading this. I agree with you completely but would never have been able to write an analysis. |
Kandi really needs to check her mom before she ends up without a man and any friends. Her mom is a narc who is threatened by anyone being getting more of Kandi's time.
NeNe's time is ticking. She isn't interesting anymore. For the past two seasons, she has been creating drama to stay relevant. I think she really screwed herself last night by being so ungracious at Kenya's charity event. The real reason she doesn't like Kenya is because she's taking her place as the shit starter. I love Kandi, Phaedra, and Porshia though. Happy for Porshia landing a role in the play. She's a little dingy but she has a golden heart. |
Holla!!!!! |
Who is the model in Atlanta, with the sister named Mallory? She and Kandi are the least vile (although I HATE Peter - the shady shit-stirrer who keeps using his wife's money to start failing businesses). |
Danielle of RHONJ |
That was a nomination for most vile, in case that wasn't clear. ![]() |
Agree. And I can't deal with how Kandi won't put her foot down. It's sad to see how her Mom is sabotaging her happiness. |
I definitely think Kandi's mom is not right and Kandi needs to shut her down. But as far as the voicemail goes, we don't know exactly what the assistant girl said to whoever the mom's friend was. We don't know how nasty that went. All we hear is the fallout reaction from it. NeNe has gotten way too full of herself. She thinks she is way too good for anyone of them so why is she still even doing reality TV. Her "couples party" was a disaster because she purposely set it up to be so she could play the Queen Bee role. She looked like an ass though. |
