Home Goods, Walmart online, Home Depot online, Lowes online - I like stores I can return them to.

I was a Crate & Barrel today and was actually impressed with their selection and prices.

OP here, thanks for the suggestions everyone. I may go to a carpet store and get a diamond pattern bound rug or something.

For ordinary or more modern designs, I have had great luck with the Tent sales at Macy's. Great selection, great prices. They will bargain on them, too. I also got some great rugs on Craig's List. Including an antique one that I paid $3,500 and then was appraised for $40,000. It was an embassy sized rug, so even for a basic crappy rug that size, I would have paid about $3500. Don't pay high prices for Craigs list stuff, though, unless you have it appraised first. Lots of people sell persian rugs that are cheap machine made knock offs.

I have had a very positive experience with peerlessrugs.com

My house has about 10 area rugs and I bought most of them from the website. The first purchase was about 10 years ago (the rug is still in excellent shape) and the most recent now was last week.

I got a great rug on Craigslist -- all woven wool, Chinese, from the 70s, excellent condition.

I also got a great one from Bakersfield on Rt. 7 in Falls Church, also woven, wool, Karastan.

Don't get a tufted rug, they can have problems. Check out the rug chick website for guidance on shopping -- it was very helpful to me.
