Should we start a "gifted child" forum? Good grief.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and venture that this is exactly the type of bitterness and hostility that the PP was referring to.

I'm not bitter at all. I have a fairly gifted 13 year old at Frost in Annandale. I do, however feel this country is a joke in the education department and what we label "gifted" is far from it. We have low standards of education so children who are normal and on par are labeled super smart which is not the case. I am not saying these children are not intelligent but compared to other countries they lag behind.

It is a little out of control. But I respect your right to advocate and do right by your gifted. There is just a tad bit of "taking yourself and your kid too seriously" going on for my tastes, thank you very much.

There really are very few places that parents CAN talk about their kids' giftedness or any concerns they may have. You sure can't talk to other parents b/c then you're just bragging, right? Why is it so hard to understand that an anonymous forum is one of the very few place that parents CAN talk about the issues involving their gifted kids and so they do. In droves. A dedicated forum would be great. Keeping the bitter nasties off it on the other hand... those same people would still be drawn to it to flame and mock. People seem VERY challenged by the fact that some kids are different, in respect to the high end of intelligence. I don't expect they will just leave it alone but I am very for giving it a try!

You really need to learn to use google. There are tons of websites, groups and chat forums dedicated to gifted children. They are even broken down by region, area of giftedness, and so on. Maybe your gifted child could help you research them. I was able to come up with at least 20 sites for parents of gifted children.

Why would I approve them for you? I am just suggesting that you do a search and take a look at what is out there. If your child is truly that gifted there must be a website out there more comprehensive than DCUM that is geared to gifted children. There are forums out there nationally and locally for bright children and their parents.

What does 'meh' even mean? Sorry, I'm not too bright....

I know that having gifted children can present some major challenges, from crap teachers to over easy curriculum to behavior issues to boredom to overdoing it, underdoing it, the list goes on.

BUT lately there have been some threads that have the "woe is me" sound to them. I liken the problems to "I am TOO beautiful and people at work resent me." or "I work out too much and my body is SO awesome, people are jealous" or "my sex life is off the charts, I cannot even find time to eat." These are problems real to the people having them, but eye-roll inducing to those who do not.

So while I am not trying to minimize your issues (which I guess I am), I am anonymously saying I am sick about reading them. And I do avoid them, but lately they have been really annoying and frequent.

Smart is NOT gifted. I mean, my dog is smart. But my child, well gifted beyond belief.
