Contractor sign in the front yard

Anonymous
I've had contractors in my house for 4 months At 3 months they put in the sign. Now 4 months in, they are spending less time here each week. I took the sign down. I said they can put it up closer to the finish. It's a sign that looks like the political signs I don't like and clutters up the yard. The son asked me to put it back up because it gives them more business. We have another 3 months to go. I don't want it to be 5 months to finish because they got so much business from putting up a sign. That is not fair to me. If I put it up in 2 months, I think They'll still get plenty of business and maybe our project will be done on time. I don't know if I'm right or not but I am upset at the thought of letting them put up a tacky sign causing our job to get done two months later.

I am a contractor. I don't usually post job signs. If you asked for a discount in exchange for me putting up a sign that would give me pause as my PITA radar would start going off.

Now, when we are near done and you have been fair to work with and are willing to be a reference and or let me show your house to future clients - well then you would be surprised at the level of service you will get along with a bill that says "Don't worry about it - we were lucky to have you as clients".

Recently had a client - they were very happy. Young family with a newborn and trying to save a little money. They had some existing drywall damage. I sent a guy two-three times to fix/paint/etc. No charge.

Sure enough a few months go by and I get call for a nice size job - where did you get my name ? Well - it was the nice previous client that had been a pleasure to work for.

Truly I am amazed at that folks that just don't get it. You want a discount for a sign - do you realize what you are telegraphing ?

Sounds like OP was "telegraphing" that she didn't want a sign and indicated that loud and clear in striking out the clause. If they have no other business and need to rely on a sign in the yard then they should have told her that then. Not just put it up anyway against her clear wishes.

I'm truly amazed that a contractor would do that.

The people across the street from us still have the contractor sign up in front of their shrubs from some work they had done about two years ago. Is the company paying them to keep the sign up?

They didn't put it there. Just like snow on your windshield.

Oh come on. If the pizza delivery guy parked his car in your front yard for a few weeks, yes. This is completely different. We struck out the clause in our contract about putting a sign in the front yard. All work is being done in the rear, it was not necessary. they were upset about this and said that it impacted their bottom line but we didn't budge and they didn't offer us a discount as a condition for putting it there.

That's not how it works. No contractor can justify the cost of even a 2% discount by you allowing them to put up a sign that is unlikely to get them more business. The sign thing is when you are done negotiating, planning to do the work and you are still haggling over price. If the guy held out a little in order to offer you this final discount, he doesn't want to just give it to you for nothing in exchange. That shows he was holding out. So he says, OK I tell you what, if you let us post our sign... But believe me, they don't care. I'm not giving up even $500 profit just to post a sign. If you refused the sign, then I'd ask for something else that is easy for you to agree to, like writing an online review. Anything to give your cheap a$$ a final discount and get you to sign.

It's usually in the contract, first time wearing big boy panties and paying someone to do work?

We had a contractor put up a HUGE sign in our prominent yard. The neighbors complained to him, but not to us.

This post is fake news. Your neighbors would have immediately complained to the HOA first, you second, the police third, and the vendor last.

You think you are getting discounts. You are not.

Did you sign a contract? That the contractor has the right to do this has been in every remodeling contract I have done.
