So frustrated! Either follow fairfax county or don't!

PP, do you work for SSSAS because your answer sounds so scripted. I beg to differ that the majority of students don't like in Alexandria proper. And considering most parents of FCPS that I know even think FCPS should be split between western and eastern for inclement weather policy it is so ridiculous to have SSSAS follow FCPS. Why can't they have a backbone like burgundy or ACDS and make their own decisions. Both were open, on tine. Burgundy eve uses SSSAS for their buses, they didn't have the in Tuesday and they still expected all students to be at school, in Fairfax county.

From what I understand FCPS closed because they were worried about such a large student population, waiting at bus stops, without adequate clothing, which I do not believe would be such an overwhelming concern at SSSAS . Student population much smaller, overwhelming majority are driven to school, and hopefully most have a winter coat. IMO, SSSAS needs to change their policy. So far they've missed 3 days for little to no reason and unlike FCPS do NOT have snow days built into the calendar. My kids get out in may.

I'm pp, and I am a Fairfax County resident whose children go to SSSAS, and who happens to have read the policy manual (and am not employed by the school.) I'm a little confused. Are you OP? Because OP's complaint was that the school didn't follow FCPS on Tuesday (although, per the policy, they should have). In other words, they did "have a backbone" and make their own decision. Now the complaint is that SSSAS should make up their own mind (which they did on Tuesday, which was the source of the original complaint.). Just goes to show that you can't please everyone. I honestly don't know any SSSAS parents for whom this is an issue. Considering that (al)most every year there are 3-4 or more closures for weather or other "emergency" reasons, I would say that snow days ARE "built into the calendar." I think the fact that my kids won't be going to school until almost July is a feature, not a bug.

No I am not the OP. If the school follows FCPS but has no snow days built in, how are the days accounted for? We must know different people because I know several lower and middle school families for whom this is an issue. I also read the manual and knew of the policy before allowing my children to attend, it wasn't the deciding factor. However it is relevant to this thread. Now I am scrambling to find accommodations this morning for my kids bc of the 2 hour delay, when ACPS are on time.

I agree. This is an issue for MANY SSSAS parents. Everyone I know is complaining. And I would guess that more than 50 percent of the students live in AC - not fairfax county.

That's because at least 50% of the parent body at any given school are whiny second-guessers.

I was told that privates are required to select a local public jurisdiction to follow for closures as part of their licensing. Ours has deviated this week from FCPS and I was surprised (but it was the right decision). I'd prefer them to not close because of the cold, since that means we won't have to make-up the days later. But I understand why FCPS closed - they have tons of kids who have to stand outside waiting for buses, and many probably don't have appropriate clothes for this type of cold.

Accreditation bodies don't require this. This is an elective decision for the privates.

Private schools, unlike public schools, aren't required to make up snow days. There was a thread on this some time back.

Here's the old snow day thread. The short answer is that the requirements with re: to ## of school days are generally lower for private schools, so makeup days are generally not necessary.
