privates exempt from snow day limits?

Do private schools have a required # of days of school, such that they are also in danger of reaching a max (and must go later into June)? Does this vary by school? Info please!

No. Because they are private, they set their own calendars. They are not subject to the same min number of days the public schools are. So, any added days would be at the sole discression of each particular school.

Some schools do have snow make up days on the calendar (President's Day, for example). Not sure how many you have to miss in order to use that, though.

I went to private in the area and I remember having to make up a snow day....must have been blizzard of '96. We actually had school on a SATURDAY. It was more like a half day. It was unheard of and a local news station even came to the school and covered it. It wasn't that bad actually because it was a 1/2 day and it was so weird that it was a joke. We basically dicked around for the day while MoCo public schools had to tack on a full day or so at the end of the year.

I frankly hope the private schools make up the missed days or at least most of them. The school calendar at private schools is not longer enough as it is. Our private schools gets multiple long weekends plus 2 2-week vacations at Xmas and Spring, and they still get out in very early June.

Private schools also tend to have less snow days. Today was the first this year for DC. Tomorrow will be the second.

Fewer snow days.

If the private is accredited it is required to have school less days than public but make up days are still required if they fall under the minimum required days.

Anyone know what that minimum number of days is?

In Virginia, it used to be public schools had to be in session 180 days per year and privates 165.
I don't know if it's the same now or not

What does this mean? Accredited by what/who? If they're accredited they have to have fewer days than public schools? Our private has more school days than public so it's not accredited?

They do not have to have fewer days but are usually required less days per year. It use to be 180 for public and 171 for privates. The privates can go as many more days as they like.

I think the rule is, the more you pay, the less they actually go to school.

Just received an e-mail from my DC’s school. Head said Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) requires independent schools to complete 170 days of school. So, AIMS schools (Association of Independent Maryland Schools) do have a limit.
