Chomping pens

Anonymous
My daughter was at her boyfriend's house yesterday and chewing his pen! She came home with blue lips as she couldn't quite wash it out. It was funny and we thought she was freezing from the cold! Don't think her boyfriend was too impressed. So yes, they still do chew pens even though they are not 7 years old.

There was a tragic case in my home town of a a teenage boy who died because he was chewing on one of those old bic pen lids (so the long bit was bent into a curve) and he accidentally swallowed it. The curve acted like a hook and punctured his trachea or something. So tragic. Since then, I always tell people not to put things like that in their mouths.

Oh you can tell but do they listen. My DS chews his pens like there's no tomorrow. It leaked a couple of times and it doesn't seem to encourage him to stop. So in our house, we often see those wet, chewed up pens all over the place. I just dump them in the bin if it looks too disgusting. I bought him a branded metal pen one birthday, he chewed it too. His girlfriend is also a pen chewer and a nail biter too. So it's common but I really hope he outgrows it. I have seen bank tellers chew pens in front of me. Terrible habit.

Ah yes. Pen chewing. I am a high school teacher and I have a pen holder of pens for kids who forgot to bring theirs. By day two, quite a few do have teeth marks on them. And yes, it's disgusting but the kids don't seem to mind chewing on a pen that has been chewed by someone else and mouth it just the same! I usually have to throw them out by end of term because those that are returned to me are so chewed its yucky!

Unsure if it's related but what's interesting is i have observed in my classroom are that the kids who seem academically smarter are less smart and chew pens more than those who are academically weaker.

They don't seem to grow out of it. My kids chewed pens since elementary school and now that one is in university, she still chews her pens and highlighters until it's all full of teeth marks. My sister was also a chewer since school and till this day, as a mother of three too, she still chews away at her pens, nails, sunglasses etc

I have a friend who's son just finished med school and still does it. I have an 8 year old that chews on EVERYTHING-pens/pencils, shirt sleeves, erasers, and was hoping he would grow out of this. Looks like he may not but at least there seem to be others like him-maybe he isn't as weird as we think he is?

It isn't wierd but it is a widespread bad habit. I teach Sunday school and I noticed more than half of my teenage kids chew their pens to shreds or fidget or chew on hoodie strings, nails etc. and there aren't even any hard questions that they have to answer! My own daughter was a chewer too up to high school but suddenly stopped when she entered university. Yippie. No more chewed pens for me at home!

I think most kids do it to burn off nervous energy--like toe tapping, hair twisting, nail biting. They're probably unaware while they're doing it for the most part.

This is the one I recommend. They gave one to my son (6) at school and I ordered more. They take a beating.

Once you get a mouth full of ink you no longer chew a pen. BTDT, had black lips and teeth once. Nasty taste.

Haha. I bite mine too but I am careful to avoid the ink portion of the ink stick.

complete waste of money for us-our chewer also loses everything so I wouldn't even bother

We don't like it either. I don't like how it collects saliva between the pencil and the topper. I let my dd chew her wristband and seems to work to help her in class.
