PP, there is no way in hell I would take a 1 year-old out on inauguration day. Twenty years ago I was in Georgetown on Halloween where a crowd of 150,000 revelers had gathered. Our group literally had to join hands and form a human chain to move through the crowds so we wouldn't lose each other. We were pushed and shoved all along M Street but I was very young and fairly drunk. That was only a 150,000 people - a mere fraction of the crowds expected on inauguration day. Think of people elbowing your baby on the metro and in the crowds, the germs, and the fact that if you go and decide that you want to leave early, it will take hours to get back home. Why would anyone put their kid through that? |
As a veteran parent, protester, and public participant, I can tell you it'll probably be lost on your child, but that it will help normalize public participation in large crowded important events. That is not to say that it will be enjoyable. It won't. If you want to go, give it a whirl. Georgetown on Halloween is different than an innagural crowd at the mall. |
I'm going with my one year old boy in our ergo... I'm not scared ![]() |
I'm taking my babe too!!! Go Obama!!! |
Poor kids. ![]() |
I'm the 16:57 poster, and we've decided we're definitely NOT going to take our 1-yr-old. Just a little too crazy to risk taking a kid into all that (btw, we live in Silver Spring, so trek would include Metro, walking, etc.) |
we were planning on taking our 17 mo old in an Ergo (we have standing tickets for the inaguration) but i'm rethinking it: 1) what if they don't allow the Ergo (too close to a back-pack)? and 2) I read on a site yesterday that everyone needs tickets for the inaguration at the capitol including children unless they are "too young to walk"..... we only have 2 tix - one for me, one for husband. now we're thinking about leaving her home with the nanny, but i'm afraid nanny won't be able to get here (from springfield) in time (b/f we need to start walking to the capitol from dupont/logan)! what a mess! but watching Obama being sworn in is gonna be worth it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Remember the weather would be very cold for children.
better be safe than sorry! |
You do not love your kids if you take them. |
Yes, dear, I realize you have to pee, but I told you before that it would take 5 hours to walk a block to the nearest restroom. |
14:42: Is letting the nanny spend the night an option??? |
why would anyone take their small child or even older walking child? How selfish. Crowds are unpredictable and it will be a miracle if they get past this inaguration without a few people being crushed to death. |
It's not about being scared, it's about being sensible...big difference. I'm not scared to drive with my seatbelt off, I've never been in an accident, but I always wear one because it's an educated and sensible choice. Its called being a responsible parent. Good luck with the ergo. I'm sure the SS will consider it a backback and turn you around on your heels and get you back to where you came from. |
WELL if anyone would like to go to the events, but have children, I would be happy to care for them. I have 10 years experience, references and can be reached at 301-839-3664. Please note that I am booked the evening of the 20th. |
