What should I do? Store forgot to put an item in my bag

You could look up the number of a convenient local location and ask the store where you shopped to call the local store to make a local pick up easier.

customer service told you to go to the store and you just said, okay dokey? You didn't mention during that phone call that you were out of town so they could tell you what to do?
I was curious about that too. Didn't you say "I can't go back to the store because I bought it while out of town"?

Did it roll out of the bag during your travel? Did you check the suitcase?

The store has cc cameras especially near the register so you shoukd be able to plead your case when you call the store.
