look up America's Test Kitchen equipment reviews for the slow cookers. They do rigorous testing and can tell you which ones are worth the money and always recommend a best buy

No you put it right on the heat source. No need to warm it up because it is some kind of metal not ceramic.

Great to know--thanks! I don't have the Ninja but just got this Cuisinart and love it! Hoping to do as you suggested since it's not ceramic either.
