Indiana University -- looking for recent experiences

It is really pretty. I went there back in the 80s...

Fantastic place to go if you're a basketball fan. Seeing a big game at Assembly Hall is an experience like none other.

Most of the undergrad students were from Indiana, so I felt I didn't have as much of geographic context as they did, knowing where Carmel or Brown County was. Still, not a bad choice.

Good music, journalism and folklore (!) departments when I was there.

Be warned, the winters are colder than DC, but the summers (if DD stays) are just as hot.

I could have written this exact post!

Nice limestone buildings and cute town. My roommate was a grad student in folklore.

Not recent grad, but I did love my time there. The campus felt and looked very much like what I imagined college to look like. I really enjoyed the classes I took and the professors I had. Did have a bit of culture shock at the school but adapted. Met some really interesting people that were mostly from the midwest (and of course Indiana). I purposely stayed out of the main dorms because many of my East Coast folks were there, instead stayed in the artsy dorm Collins. The town is also lovely.

Michigan State is by far the most beautiful Big 10 school. Can we at least agree on the ugliest? OSU, right?

Purdue is worse.

FWIW, I visited for a Conference last year and thought the campus was suprisingly wonderful. One of the nicest I have seen and I have been on many. Town is right there too, which I always think makes the campus that much better.

I think IU is nicer than Michigan State. Probably nicer than U-M as well although I like U-M's campus. Definitely nicer than Purdue and OSU.

IU has become a hot school lately. Students from top privates apply.

My brother went to Purdue, My sister and I went to I.U., my nephews go to Michigan State, my other nephew is headed to Wisconsin. We are all gainfully employed. Yeah! I love the BIG 10! We are proof that you can do well at a BIG TEN school. Miss my Hoosiers!! Miss Bloomington and the peace of the midwest!

While the consensus here seems to be it's not as pretty, if she's into STEM fields, she might want to have a look at Purdue. Another land grant college and not too expensive, even out of state, and some really excellent math/science programs.

Crap. Just went down a notch or two in my book.

Yes, this is true in my NOVA community. Kids at privates who can't get into the top Virginia state schools are choosing Indiana. That doesn't mean it is not a great school, just that it is an alternative for solid students who get closed out of instate options because of the stiff competition here. I am from that part of the country, and IU was well regarded when I was growing up.The music school is still considered one of the best in the country, but if your child is a serious musician, you probably already know that.

Purdue is an excellent school. It's always been a leader in Engineering and Agriculture, if you are into those things.
