We never have mashed potatoes on Thanksgiving..or sweet potatoes. We also use Thursday as a travel day and eat our big meal on Friday.. Do whatever your family or guests like..

You have to have mashed potatoes. One year I went to someone house and they didn't have any. It was a disappointment and I still remember !!!

Turkey or no turkey is dictated by state law. Mashed taters are a federal matter.
FWIW, we never do turkey! We do a different meat but otherwise all the sides are straight-up traditional carb overload.
