Domperidone. Why or why not?

The only pain was that it took forever to get it from the Canadian pharmacy I ordered it from. For baby #2 I'll be ordering ahead of time. It was much cheaper than getting it at the compounding pharmacy.

I read a ton before I decided to go this route, also at the suggestion of a LC. Never did I come across anything saying it causes organ damage! Does the PP have any references?

caused heart failure in a study according to my lc. results are often overlooked because study samples were elderly men not bfing moms. but still not worth the risk in my opinion.

I took it, and nothing bad happened, as far as I know. No side effects that I noticed. I ordered it from New Zealand. It doubled my supply, probably -- though we still also had to use a lot of formula. Without it there would have been no point to breastfeeding at all.

Unless you can show some reference, I'm not sure this study exists. I've done a bunch of research in this area, and never come across this study.

Maybe it's overlooked for the same reason very smaller, focused studies are often over looked when discussing some drugs and disorders.

The target audience for the drug was never elderly men. So it seems a far reaching, long term study on that populate using the drug would be unlikely.

Against. I decided that when women started taking unapproved meds so that they could breast feed, we had gone too far with the "benefits" of breast milk. I won't use a provider who condones this in an way.

Not saying the study is without flaws, but for me, personally, it's not worth the risk.

Domperidone is not approved by the FDA in the US, but it is approved in other countries (Canada, for example). And yes, it's not approved for increasing supply, but there are lots of medications that health care providers routinely prescribe for off-label use (i.e., prescribed for a purpose other than the purpose approved by the drug-approval agency).

It not only not FDA-approved, but the FDA has issued an explicit warning against it to lactating mothers:

http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/DrugSafety/InformationbyDrugClass/ucm173886.htm

And what particularly concerns me is that the drug is excreted in the breastmilk and thus fed to your baby, with unknown risks. Here you are, worrying about drinking alcohol or taking other drugs while pregnant or breastfeeding, but not about taking this drug against which there is an explicit FDA warning? People must really think formula is poison if they believe this is a better option.

I am aware. I am also aware that the FDA has issued a warning against its use. I understand off-label uses and in my belief, they should only be used where the potential benefits far exceed the unknown or known risks. To put bf in this category is ridiculous and dangerous.

+1. Cannot believe people are willing to feed this drug to their babies.

Formula is not the devil, people.

I have a pretty deeply emotional compulsion to do whatever I can to breastfeed this baby -- it's totally irrational, I know, but it comes from feeling guilty about his premature birth. But even I wasn't willing to do domperidone. Domperidone acts against dopamine, and I wasn't going to mess with my dopamine levels. I have a family member who died by suicide, a wonderful, amazing person whose brain went completely haywire after the birth of a child. I wasn't going to risk taking something that could mess with my brain chemistry just for that.

If you're looking for something that might help, my LC recommended Go Lacta, a mulanggay supplement (it's a leaf from the Phillippines). Of course supplements and herbs have risks, too, but it is used extensively through Asia and worked well for me.
