Shopping While Black

However, I do imagine that Barney's has seen its share of attempted use of stolen credit cards. And, I would guess, that the stolen credit card use may have been by people in the same age/race range as the persons in the article.

I'm sorry, but are you saying that we need to create two classes of adults? And honestly do you think some white trust fund kids would have the same problem? Of course not.

Lastly, there are processes for protecting against credit card fraud, and they do not involve calling the police on someone after completing a transaction. Swipe the card, check ID, foliow the instructions on the terminal, and the merchant is safe. Fraud goes to the credit card company, not the merchant.

A hedge fund does not have much to do with managing retail employees. Barney's is an asset to them.

normally you would be right because normally hedge funds do not take controlling majority stakes in companies.....that's more of a PE thing.

however in this case perry has controlling stake in barney's and has a significant minority of seats on the barney's board.

in this sense, he indirectly has a lot to do with how the retail operation is run.

this is precisely why lots of hedge funds don't take controlling interests because they want to be in and out of an asset class with more flexibility than PE.

it's like what sears/kmart is for eddie lampert.

no, perry doesn't directly manage the floor employees...but since he has huge power through the board, he has huge power on what the retail culture is like.

Find me cases in the news where Barney's--I'll give you more room to hang yourself, ANY department store--has detained or called the local authorities on 19 to 21 year old white patrons using credit cards or debit cards to purchase high end items. Let me guess, you're a white 30-something and you aren't racist because you know several black people. If you really think that this is not a race-based situation, you really have no clue.

It's been more than 36 hours since you posted this. I guess that person couldn't find one case, so she thankfully shut up since she couldn't put up.

What you're describing is racial profiling. It's unlawful and deeply offensive.

The mall security is not held to the same standard as county police. They profile based on recent crime an stock loss reports from store owners. It is profiling, and that is the reason why the mall hires them.

We can hold them, and the stores that pay them, to the standards that we think are acceptable.

The lawsuit names the New York City Police Department, so obviously this point is irrelevant.

I usually have low tolerance for these types of lawsuits, but even I thought what happened to those two young people was very sad.

Checking ID and alerting the police are two different things. They should not have been stopped by the police and asked to produce anything. When was the last time you were asked to show your receipt and ID after making a purchase? I mean really people. Just put yourself in their shoes for once. It is not that hard to see how terribly demeaning that is.

On the positive side , anyone who blows their tax return on a 2k purse should be arrested.
