Expunging Grades from 8th Grade/Middle School

Anonymous
Your daughter has an opinion. As parents we should lighten the burden of "what-if", worrying if a door will close based on decision A vs B. The option is there, it's ok with the school system. There are unknowns that no one can assure you of. This is the kind of thing which will increase with every HS decision re college. Her decision is reasonable, I would not keep her from making it.

The advanced diploma requires 4 years of math and 3 years of one foreign language or 2 years each of two languages.

If you expunge the grades, your dd will need to continue Spanish through Spanish 4 and will need to take a core math course all 4 years of high school.

If that is the plan anyway, go for it.

Did your dd take Algebra honors or regular Algebra? If it was honors, don't forget the .5 GPA bump.

My dd is in 7th grade Algebra honors, and will take Geometry and a language next year. We plan on keeping an A in the language and a B or higher in honors math classes.

why wouldn't you? Is there something higher than this?

Is it necessary to be snarky? If you read the prior sentence, you will see that the child is in 7th grade and does not have any final grades yet. It's an if-then scenario.

"The advanced diploma requires 3 years of one foreign language ... "

If a student completes level 3 of a foreign language, are they considered to have completed the 3 year requirement of the Advanced Studies Diploma -or- does the student need 3 credits (which would be 2 credits if they expunged Spanish 1)

This is the question. I would get the answer IN WRITING from the Guidance Department.

Maybe D will go on to Spanish 4 (and it wouldn't matter) but in case she does not. And I'm sure other students would want to know.

I read the link to mean 3 credits. Expunging a grade expunged the credits.
The only other option would be to do Spanish 2 and 3 and then another language 1 and 2.

In my day, a B+ was considered a good grade. In FCPS, it is a 3.3 on the g.p.a. So in this competitive college environment do you want to saddle your kid with a 3.3 to start off high school? Guess it depends on whether you think they can do better than that in 9th.

I graduated from high school over thirty years ago, and a B+ was a 3.3 at my school also. Were there school systems where it was assigned a different value?

didn't make the point clearly. In those days, a 3.3 was a fine score, but then you could get into a good college with a 3.5 or 3.6 g.p.a. These days you're talking GMU or JMU with those scores. But not U.Va or W&M or W&L. And certainly not any of the other highly ranked unis talked about so often on DCUM.

How is starting out high school with a B+ any worse than starting with nothing? And how can you be so certain that it won't end up being something that brings the GPA up rather than down in the end?

In our case, would be starting with B- (2.7). Agree that DD could end up wishing she had the B- and the credits...

this is a good point; that is why I said I guess it depends on whether you think you'll do better than that in 9th.

ok, I have posted before and I'm going to say as my final advise - If expunging Spanish 1 would eliminate the "Advanced Studies Diploma" designation after she completes Spanish 3, then I would not expunge. You do not want to set her up where she has to take Spanish 4 to get that diploma.

(She may wish to take level 4, of course. And more is better) If eliminating the 2.7 means 1 more year of Spanish - and there's ANY chance she wouldn't want to do Level 4, it's not worth it to expunge.

Math I'm not as concerned about - either way - there are more choices for senior year math.

Exactly.

Yeah. I don't want her as competition for my college bound kid.
