I'm surprised it's popular. Most Gen Y's have never heard of it, and isn't that the generation that dictates what's popular? They all know Scarlett Johanson, but not Miss O'Hara.

It's a dramatic movie with strong performances and a dynamic female lead, a lot of romance and passion. Very captivating in the same way "Titanic" is.

I always felt like it was a movie about me - a female, left, through vagaries of history, without a country or a family and forced to do something she never thought she would have to - to fend for herself.

It's a great book. Other favorite rereads of mine are Dr Zhivago and Outlander.

I'm a massive classic movie fan but GWTW and Casablanca are so overrated.

There are a lot better films from that period or on TCM.

+1. My favorite novel since I was 12, I've read it probably 20 times. You do have to look past the racism. I just take it as a reflection of what attitudes were at the time. If you have critical thinking skills, this is not difficult.

Love the movie! And I look past the controversy of the subject matter because back then "it was what it was" and central to the story.

It, like Pride and Prejudice, is a well-written archetypal romance novel. Strong heroine, pining hero who won't declare how he feels who saves the heroine from disaster without the heroine knowing it, heroine who at first believes she hates the hero, etc. Even with all the other parts, it appeals to the romantic.
