Will Obama pay full tuition at Sidwell?

Fair enough, a job like that is what you make of it, but for many people a think tank position is a full-time job.

I love Michelle, but I think it's fair to say her Chicago job was a bit of a patronage job she got after hubby was elected Senator (she never even made half that before). Another one will come along after he's out of office, but they can't handle the obvious conflict of interest now.

That said, she could certainly work first lady if she wanted to- I know if it were me, I would!

Michelle Obama graduated with honors from Princeton and has a Harvard law degree. She was an associate at one of Chicago's top law firms and then worked for a number of public interest organizations which made her completely qualified for the position at U Chicago Hospital. Why would you assume her job was a "patronage" job? Just because her husband was a Senator? Please. People with resumes like hers make that and much more. I have an Ivy law degree from around the same time and most of my classmates (including myself) make more than Michelle did. Get over yourself.

I think it was admirable of her to have a staff job at a hospital rather than earning big bucks for long irregular hours at a law firm. The husband was out of the Chicago area and I think children at any age need the parents. At least one should be available on a regular basis for dinner and evenings. Aned when they are teenagers it is really essential to be around and deeply involved.

I am sure that Mrs. Obama could do the same while being First Lady. The question is whether she can hold a full time job where is goes to the office/work from home and gets a pay check. Cheri Blair did it so its not impossible.

It will be interesting to see if Jill Biden does take another teaching job.

Lynn has written more than children's books, in fact one of them is quite explicit!

But wasn't that quite a while before Cheney became VP? I think that was PP's point.

Michelle received a raise from 100k+ to 300K+ just after Barack was sworn into the Senate. Same job. You do the math.

MIchelle Obama is not going to be a SAHM in the real meaning of the term - she will have dinners to attend, trips, events, etc. Thus the reason her mother is tagging along.

Since when is being the first lady of the United States not a full time job? In this role Mrs. Obama will have a great number of responsibilities.

So a wife is a shadow of the husband? Not a person who can pursue her own dreams?

Is that the role of the first lady, give up your own dreams and be the assistant of the man?

To compare Michelle Obama's life to ours is absurd. She will have her own role in history and an opportunity to help her husband define his as well. She will automatically have the platform to influence any issue she holds dear. She would have to be completely lacking in all imagination to turn her back on those opportunities and seek a narrow little job "outside the home" just to make a shallow point about independence.
