Egyptians are a costume: http://www.halloweencostumes.com/adult-egyptian-queen-costume.html
Chinese are a costume: http://www.halloweencostumes.com/child-dragon-lady-costume. Arabs are a costume: http://www.halloweencostumes.com/arab-costume.html English are a costume: http://www.halloweencostumes.com/english-nanny-costume.html black people are a costume: http://www.halloweencostumes.com/thug-life-mask.html Tell me again why it is offensive to have an American Indian costume? |
You are so utterly and completely wrong. You should be totally embarrassed. It's the Museum of the American Indian, not the Museum of the Native American. Do you even KNOW any American Indians? They call themselves Indian. They don't use native American. The term is outdated and offensive. Please stop using it. |

While worrying about being "PC" over an "Indian Costume" is nice, this great country of ours just allowed a "Native American" child to be legally kidnapped. Facebook-standingourgroundforVeronicaBrown. She is not the only one in recent years. |
Veronica is 1/64th Native American. Meaning, she's 63/64ths *not* Native American. Please stop being dramatic. |
OP, I see nothing wrong with that costume. Frankly, if I saw a kid dress up as someone from my home country (Armenia), I would be totally excited. |
You couldn't just google "racist halloween costume" and answer this one yourself, OP?
http://gawker.com/5672914/is-your-halloween-costume-racist/ http://www.teachforamerica.org/blog/your-halloween-costume-racist Nearly every link posted by that irate and ignorant PP fails the test. An exception, "English Nanny," is Mary Poppins without having to pay Disney for the title. This is why a PP told you that the costume you've selected isn't an accurate depiction of Pocahontas. This really isn't that complicated. |
Ah the PC frenzy traditions of Halloween... It's the first sign that fall is finally here.
The PC bandwagon will be the end of this country. OP, I say the costume is lovely. And I am 1/64 American Indian, if that means anything to you. (It shouldn't.) |
To the PP who "was born here" that doesn't make you a "Native American." To the PP who thinks "Indians" don't use the term "Native Americans," here is an interview with one of the original members of the Village People. Thirty years ago, he referred to himself as the Indian; now he refers to himself as "the Native American." http://www.npr.org/2011/07/09/137688914/the-village-people-play-not-my-job Felipe Rose's dad was Lakota Sioux. |
If you don't understand why any of those other costumes are offensive, you won't understand why the Pocahontas costume is offensive. "Black people are a costume...thug life mask". I just can't. |
Funny how no one ever thinks they offend priests and nuns when they slut them up. When that is REALLY offensive. |
Actually plenty of people think that it's offensive. Including the people who do it, who do it because it's offensive. So, no. |
Well, that settles it, I guess. ![]() ![]() Again, it's the National Museum of the American Indian. And fact remains that "native American" is an outdated term: http://www.diversityinc.com/things-not-to-say/things-never-to-say-to-american-indian-coworkers/ "Societal concerns over the proper way to address American Indians are not new. You may hesitate over calling someone an American Indian rather than a Native American, though our sources prefer American Indian (after their tribal identification)." |
I find you offensive. It's Halloween. Unclench. |
I would not do it. It's offensive because NAs are still poor and oppressed in the US. It's a liitle too flip and cutesy. And many NAs have asked that there heritage and culture not be used in this way. Totally different from akimono. |
