I agree with your friend. Native American clothing is not a "costume." Sometimes it's entirely ok to tell kids no, and better yet, explain why.
Why can't American Indians (please -- don't use that offensive term "Native Americans" -- I was born here. I am a Native American. That is an offensive and outdated term, sort of like calling a black person a negro) be a costume? What's offensive about this? Why is this offensive when the other examples are not?
Native American is not offensive, and is not like calling someone a negro. Native American is a term used to refer to indigenous people within the US borders. It isn't indicating who was and wasn't born here.
You are so utterly and completely wrong. You should be totally embarrassed. It's the Museum of the American Indian, not the Museum of the Native American. Do you even KNOW any American Indians? They call themselves Indian. They don't use native American. The term is outdated and offensive. Please stop using it.
To the PP who "was born here" that doesn't make you a "Native American." To the PP who thinks "Indians" don't use the term "Native Americans," here is an interview with one of the original members of the Village People. Thirty years ago, he referred to himself as the Indian; now he refers to himself as "the Native American." http://www.npr.org/2011/07/09/137688914/the-village-people-play-not-my-job Felipe Rose's dad was Lakota Sioux.
Well, that settles it, I guess.  Again, it's the National Museum of the American Indian. And fact remains that "native American" is an outdated term: http://www.diversityinc.com/things-not-to-say/things-never-to-say-to-american-indian-coworkers/ "Societal concerns over the proper way to address American Indians are not new. You may hesitate over calling someone an American Indian rather than a Native American, though our sources prefer American Indian (after their tribal identification)."
