While school is open (including aftercare) the school has exclusive use of its property and you're complaining? Go away please. When the school isn't using the property, go right ahead and use it - when the school is in session (including before and after care, even if they're not on the equipment that very second) find one of the MANY public playgrounds in Silver Spring. |
I think it makes sense. That way the teachers know which kids they are responsible for (all of them on the playground) rather than trying to sort it out. |
Aftercare programs are separate from the school. They contract with the school to use the facilities but there is no exclusivity rule. |
OP here. The aftercare program does not even go outside until 1 hour after school ends. The after school activities use the soccer field. Our children want to play on the playground equipment which is separated from the soccer field. So far no one has said this happens at their school and that makes me think this is not common. |
It happens at my school. But there is a park next door so it's not a major problem. I don't know if it's an ironclad rule but parents keep their kids away from the school facility while he aftercare is in session. How do you know there is no exclusivity rule? Have you seen the contract? It seems reasonable to me that those who use the school (or rent the school) have exclusive use of its facilities. |
Sounds like the school overreacted to a problem with teens or unsupervised children. We live across the street from the elementary school and play there all the time, along with many other families. The school can't keep neighborhood kids who do not attend the school off the property, so how do they plan to enforce the rule? Most likely this policy won't affect those causing the problems, as they will simply ignore the rule. If you have an active PTA, I'd take it up with them to see if they can work on changing or clarifying the policy. |
Public schools = public playground. Go right ahead..... After school hours that is. You are paying for it! |
At our school the kids in aftercare wear pinneys on the playground so the aftercare supervisors can more easily keep track of them.
This is because . . . there are a lot of other children on the playground after school. In MoCo. |
i agree |
huh? Public school does not equal a public building, you just cannot go into it and use it because your tax dollars pay for it. Liability issues people -- think about it. |
Exactly. Think about what you typed. "After school hours that is." If that is the case, why not just go on during school hours? You paid for it! |
It's the same at our elementary schools in PG County. Hyattsville/College Park area. |
Our kids in aftercare go out 1/2 hour afterschool. No pennies. They use a field and playground, but others are allowed to use it as well with adult supervision. There are never more than 2-3 kids there not in aftercare. Most of the SAH moms though hang out with kids at another field area away from the playground. |
So using this logic we should keep kids off of public playgrounds because the County could be liable for injuries? Makes no sense. |
Your logic is faulty my dear! Public Playgrounds are made fir a specific purpose, specific guidelines AND INSURANCE. Schools have a different purpose, guidelines for use, rules, insurance liabilities.if you think your tax dollars grant you carte blanche entry into any local or federal government property, then walk your happy ass on into the White House and let me know how that works for you. |
