1st grade class size

All the special programs make it more difficult to apply the formula to the best advantage: AAP, magnet programs, immersion plus gen ed.

APS - 21

Can someone explain the formula? It's hard to understand as a parent who has a child in a cramped room with 30 plus kids in it.

The formula is based on the number of kids in the school. The principal gets so many teachers per pupil depending on age. Some special teachers are figured in differently and so are special needs kids.

Ds was in 1st grade 2 years ago, there were 28 in his class.

Yes, but what is the actual formula for a non-title one school specifically in terms of numbers? I was told we needed 27 more children in order to get a new teacher. That seems hard to believe that all classes are between 26-31 students in the school and yet we still need 27 more children. I'd like to know exactly what the ratios are for both special ed kids and general ed kids.

The problem comes with the variations. Example: 100 fourth graders. 65 in AAP. How to divide?

meant to add: 4 teachers

So, do you have 35 gen ed and 22/23 per class AAP or 18/17 gen ed and 32 AAP?
Anonymous
W/o AAP thrown in, it would be 25 per teacher.

You might have 100 2nd graders and 85 1st--figure it out at 25 per class--how do you do it?

We are at a school with no AAP program, no magnet program, no immersion program etc. Non- title one. Still the classes are extremely overcrowded. I'd like to understand what the actual ratio is for general ed kids and special ed kids.

My understanding is that there is a ratio for grades 1-3, 4-6, and special ed kids and they are all different.

Which teachers count toward this 25:1 ratio? The specialists, special ed teachers, instructional assistants, AAP teacher, reading specialist? It's hard to understand the formulas. 25:1 seems very high if you are also factoring in some of these teachers.

Is FLES part of this 25:1 ratio?
