Rental Deposit Money Question

Well, there's only one person who knows where the check is...why don't you call or write or email the landlord.

Yes, landlord is late.

I am trying to decide whether or not to give them the benefit of the doubt that snail mail is the cause for the delay, but as the days tick by...

Earlier, you said if he is late. Why not pick up the phone and call. And you did leave a new address for him, right?

But if the tenant really was as awesome as you claim to be, I send it sooner because I have nothing to deduct. I wouldn't expect 100%.

Awesome, thank you!

That is entirely possible, and we are prepared for that. However, if we do not get the full deposit back, it will be the first time in nearly two decades of renting all over the country, and contrary to what the landlords told us at check out

Just out of curiosity, what is the benefit to the landlord to hold that money beyond the full 45 days? Is the money held in some sort of escrow account? Does it bear interest?

Money is held in escrow. In Maryland, interest is returned to the tenant.

Do you have any lawyer friends who will write a letter for you for free? We did that when our landlord took months to return our security deposit and had ignored a couple of calls. (i was a couple years out of college and working for very low $ and REALLY needed that deposit back.) Turns out the husband of the landlord had died a couple months after we moved out and she was behind on things. We felt bad about the letter (and sent another note expressing our sympathy for her husband), but it did get us our deposit back.
