The temptation should be obvious for any parent who works downtown-ish, with moderate income, whose school district in Md or Va does not offer free preschool (age 3) or free preK. Think of the literally thousands that family would save in babysitting or daycare costs over a two-year period.

And to your unstated point, it's not as if 4 yr olds are preparing for SATs, getting knifed in the stairwell or sitting among 14-yr old mothers with 2 kids already. Stakes are quite low in earliest years.

I didn't understand that this was really a bid for free babysitting. I thought we were talking academics here. People FLEE DCPS, not flock to them, so that was the source of my confusion.

Actually, if you are up on the local news and trends, people of higher SES aren't FLEEING DCPS; just the opposite: they are flocking towards DCPS and DCPCS - and actually staying for more years of elementary than ever before. DC's schools offer more choice and better offerings than those in PG county and people are using relatives' and employers' addresses and other means to secure a spot for their children in the DC schools.

Question for the rural dweller, if people are fleeing DCPS and PCS, why are there so many wait lists 500+ names long?

You don't understand many things it seems. Maybe you could stick to making pronoucments about topics you're more comfortable with? Howard County Schools? Scrapbooking? Or the relative merits of swim clubs in N Arlington.

I understand plenty, particularly about you.

Thrilled to see that sign at Watkins. Swing by at 6 pm when aftercare lets out and enjoy the endless line of cars with MD plates arriving to pick up.

Then snap away and send the photos in. If the kids are legitimately DC residents then no problem. But if the parents are scammers they should be prosecuted.

Seriously, who dabbles in the DC schools forum and knows nothing of DC schools? There are many good schools in DC, both DCPS and DCPCS. Highly educated people that care about the education of the children and have choices send those children to school in DC. What is missing is enough good schools to meet the needs of all DC's children.

You must work at a really bad FCPS. Seriously, if you love DC schools so much, why don't you work in one? Weird.

Go away.

The residency fraud applies to the public charter schools as well. I am an FCPS elementary school teacher who lives in DC. I would stack my kids' charter school against any FCPS school in a minute. What I hate is folks who do not live here and pay taxes to scam the system. I know of a few families that have tried this at my kids' school. They lived in MD, but the mom worked close by. If you do not live in DC, then you don't get to use the public schools here.

And as another poster said, there is FREE school for PreK 3 in many schools. All day. That's well over $10K in yearly savings in childcare costs.

Actually, the share of the region's college-educated who have school-age children and live in DC remains very low. They simply believe they should get lots of attention because they are not all in the same small handful of upper NW neighborhoods. I wouldn't be surprised of some PG parents try to get their kids into some DC programs with space.

#1 this thread is not a trending or "hot" topic being that its not even 2 full pages. To see the number of outsiders giving their opinion about "crappy" DC schools is humorous to me.
#2 we don't attend an upper NW DCPS school. We attend a non immersion charter. We have about 10-12 close friends at our charter, all mixed racially, and all are very much so educated.

I have never once been on a VA or MD school thread. If DC schools are that bad, why do you find yourself refreshing on our thread so often?

Just out of curiosity, how do you feel about illegal immigrants receiving benefits, including free school?

Are you planning to report them too to the residency fraud hotline?

Actually PP, no I won't. In Plyler v. Doe, the United States Supreme Court in 1982 ruled that it is unconstitutional to deny children of undocumented immigrants a free, public education. To deny them was in violation of the 14th amendment. Any resources saved by denying them were far outweighed by the harms imposed on society at large from denying them any education.

If you'll excuse me now, I need to prepare for my job. Today is our first day back as teachers. I trust you'll continue on with your sad, ill-informed existence.
