Job opening in another city, don't want to move - how/when to broach telecommuting?

Anonymous
OP here. Thanks. You've brought up some possibilities I hadn't considered. There is no way I'm leaving my job. It pays well and is relatively secure, and its the only income we have so it would be foolish to leave. I wish I could telecommute but unfortunately that is not an option. I would be open to DH moving there for a time.

I work in another city, and have hired many people over the years for our large company. Although we are in the technology sector, I would never hire a person who did not plan to relocate here -- at least initially -- for the position. I believe in investing in the community, and as far as I am concerned too many federal dollars already go to, and stay in, Washington, DC, and the greater metropolitan area, its businesses and residents. Our company succeeds when our employees/partners are willing to devote their time to our business, are ready to spend time with her or his colleagues, and are happy to invest in our community. After you have proven yourself as an employee for several years, I would be willing to work out a telecommuting arrangement.

Wouldn't that cost more... I mean for him to rent in another location and pay for the current location? I understand not wanting to move...

I interviewed someone who didn't tell us that he didn't want to stay in DC until after we had decided to make a job offer. He asked if he could telecommute. It was extremely annoying. He didn't get the job and left us with a very bad impression.

I think you're putting a lot of thought into an application. Apply and see where it goes. If he gets an offer, cross that bridge when you get to it. Maybe it will ge a great offer
