| I am 47; I stopped with liner two years ago and just apply mascara. |
Enhances the color and shape of my eyes. |

I use a fair amount of eye make-up when I go out to get the smokey eye look. The trick for us older ladies is:
1) no glitter or shiny colors or crazy trendy decorative stuff. 2) don't use black too much if you do, blend another color over it. 3) blend blend blend. They have special blending liner brushes just for this.Brushes are key. It may take 3-4 brushes for one application. 4)make sure the color is appropriate for the occasion. not too heavy during the day. If this is office use a brown, purplish, etc. find a flattering go-to color. Also, you can use a brown or clear mascara for daytime. I am a make-up artist so feel free to ask questions! |

What brushes do you recommend to blend, and should the line be thin at the inner corner and taper to thick on the outside? Should you follow your lid, even if it droops? How about under the eye? Liner or no?
I could ask more. |
+1 I just bought one and love how smoothy it applies and blends.

That is fabulous! You win the prize.

One thing I've loved for gel eyeliner: the angled brush from Smashbox.
I bet other brands have them, but this makes my eyeliner go on smoothly every time. |
| Eyeliner properly applied takes 5 years off my eyes every time. I only use it on the upper lids-- I feel like using it on lower lids makes me look worse. I just use Almay eye pencil. |
| My favorite eyeliner is Maybelline Line Stiletto, waterproof in brownish black. I can get a very fine line very close to my eyelashes and it isn't too harsh. And it doesn't smudge. |
blending brushes are more roundish for the whole lid and the crease. not the angular ones. The angular ones are more for the liner. And no, do NOT follow your lid if it droops. You want to go up, don't fill in the gap with the same color (unless you are doing a smokey eye for evening, but that is tricky). Blend so it is not so thin but not too smudgy. Yes, it takes practice. use scotch tape to find the line that best fits your face. it is okay to line the bottom lid but use a light color. Using a light brown/mauve color. Or even applying an eyeshadow that can also be applied wet. Generally I stay away from black under the eye even when I am doing the smokey eye. I will use a eggplant color as my darkest color. Gel liner is the best but don't skimp, the gel drugstore ones don't work as well as the bobbi brown ones etc. Also, the trick for being a make-up artist is using lots of different colors together. You have to experiment and find what works best for you. Start with a base color mix different shades together. That is why they sell those huge pallet things. |

Also, use the area between your thumb and wrist to blend your eyeshadow and eyeliner ( not together) you don't want to go straight from shadow/liner to eye. You need to make sure the consistency is even. So, do a couple of strokes on your hand before applying to your eyelid.
And don't do one eye at a time. When you layer or blend additional colors go immediately to the other eye and do the same thing. I got a set of decent brushes from Costco and I saw a recent groupon for brushes. Most brands of brushes are okay. Just make sure they are natural bristles. Some liner brushes are synthetic for a wet or stiffer application. And make sure you take your make-up off use the towelettes if you are too tired. |
Yes, this, exactly. I have green eyes and light colored eyelashes. When I wear a plum or bronze eyeliner my eyes are enhanced and the color is clearer and brighter. Mascara is too much. |
| I love eyeliner and if I only could wear one item of make-up this is what I would pick. It completely opens your eyes and I totally understand why people even get it tattooed on although I would be too scared of the needle! I just discoverd at sephora stila dark brown eyeliner-it's a liquid liner that you brush on and it goes one easily and stays all day and comes off easily (I use neutrogena eye-make-up remover pads-everything else stings now to me) Some others have recommended other brands at sephora that would be willing to try. Mine goes on great but can feel a tiny bit sticky at times when I close my eyes but it's fast and easy. I am usually buying Lancome eyeliner that is a pencil but it's smears so easily compared to this. Bobbi Brown is EXCELLENT with the brush and the glass pot of gel eyeliner but it's more time consuming. |
