22 month old with Autism Diagnosis

I'm in Loudoun. One of my best friends used Dower and Associates for ABA and speech. They have a comprehensive program, I believe. Based out of Manassas but will travel to your home. They also do camps in the summertime.

I have not used them so I don't know for myself...my son has improved dramatically with the biomedical approach instead.

3 pieces of advice that I give to newly diagnosed families.

1. stay away from autism speaks. They are a fraudulent organization who give zero money back to the autism community.

2. Never give up trying to recover your child. It is NOT genetic...it never was, and it never will be. There is no such thing as a genetic epidemic.

3. Stop vaccinating. YES...it can get worse if you continue to vaccinate.

A genetic epidemic. You mean like evolution?

I say stay away from TACA and Age of Autism and other people touting snake oil solutions.

And yes of course, autism is LARGELY genetic.

Intrigued...you think autism is "survival of the fittest"? How so? Your reasoning is ASS-BACKWARDS. If autism were genetic, we'd be seeing LESS of it, as highly autistic persons aren't capable of a lifestyle that would encompass marriage and children. How do 2 perfectly healthy individuals come together, with ZERO autism in the family history, and create a child with autism and one with childhood cancer?

I think speech n socialization with typical peers in an environment with trained staff to ward off behaviors is most important. Besides just ABA I would search out programs that do ABA in natural environments, but it depends on the severity of autism. If the child pays attention n has interest in peers n imitates than he can learn from typical peers. Socialization n opportunities to practice skills learned in ABA are important for our kids. That is why I put my son in a typical day care to learn from his peers but the also in a special pic until response day care with trained staff to redirect stemming n unwanted behaviors. My goal is general education so I am working towards that not a special education self contained class.

I agree. "Genetic" = "We don't know."

Jesus. Vaccinations don't cause autism.

I used to work in a residential community for elderly people w special needs. Most had a simple diagnosis of ID, even though they clearly had areas of high intelligence. Many had behaviors that we would clearly associate with autism. What we know today to be autism had been around for a long time, it just wasn't called by that name.
