| Our pediatrician sent us to a plastic surgeon. Too much risk chance of sanitation problems and HIV contamination at Claire's. Have you seen some of the teens they have operating those stands? No way. Best $80 spent and no infection. |
Wow... And also, do you not know how HIV is transmitted? |
|
And for those morons who are about to say it is impossible, it is not, not only can you get infections from Claire's type piercing, you can get HIV and hepatitis. http://www.earpiercinginfection.net/

| I (adult) also used a plastic surgeon for a repiercing. Because ear hole had been elongated by hours with phone on right shoulder pulling down on earring (law practice pre- email), the cutting and stitching up on the hole and repiercing (later) was covered by insurance. My mother just had it done (a repiercing) also by plastic surgeon. $90. |
I think a better question would be: Who takes their child to have their ears pierced by a person, most likely a teenager who received minimal training, using a piercing gun which can't be properly sterilized between customers (and could potentially transmit disease) and which also causes trauma to the tissue rather than going to a professional body piercer who receives hours of training, has to comply with health code regulations, knows how to properly sterilize items (and uses disposable items when they can't be sterilized) and does not cause a lot of trauma to the tissue when piercing ears? |
Very good information. Will not being going to Claire's. |
I've had mine done with a gun at a jewelery store, and with the hollow needle at a tattoo shop. I actually felt the hollow needle method healed much better. We'll be asking our pediatrician to do our daughters. |
| Weird side note...If you go to Claire's make sure they use a marker of some sort to mark the ear for hole placement. Had my DD done at 10 months, simutaneously. They were not evenly placed. One hole was really low. So we had to let them close up. I was done with it. DD begged, I softened, had it done again when daughter was 7 at Doc office--perfectly placed. |
|
Exactly! Claire's is sloppy about hole placement and you have to live the rest of your life looking at your or your daughter's incorrectly placed hole!

| How about Piercing Pagoda? Anyone use them? |
|
Another vote for a reputable tattoo parlor/body piercer. My children do not want anything pierced but if they did, that is where I would take them. Definitely not a place in a mall.
Fwiw, I am 43 years old with single piercings in my ears. I got mine done at Bradless (anyone remember that store? For those that don't, it was similar to a Kmart!) when I was 5. |
| We used Piercing Pagoda 5 weeks ago for DD10. There was only one person working the kiosk, but she spent a lot of time making sure that the piercings would be totally even. She actually measured, then marked the ears with marker, wasn’t satisfied, re-measured, re-marked the ears, studied them from different distances, then had dd use a mirror to approve, then finally had me approve. She really took her time, sanitized everything, wore gloves. I had asked our pediatrician where to go and she basically said go to a shopping mall, lol. DD really didn’t like the idea of going to a tattoo parlor, so I didn’t push it. She’s been meticulous about following the instructions to keep her ears clean and they seem to have healed just fine. We’re satisfied. |

Thank you so much, PP. I am actually asking for my 11yo daughter so this sounds good. May I ask which location this was? |
Our pediatrician has a waiting list through the beginning of 2019! It is so crazy. |
