I paid my bill and closed my card.

It dinged my credit score though because amex was one of the first cards i opened and by closing it looks like i have been using revolving credit for less time than i actually have.

it was worth it though to not have to deal with these fuckturds any longer.

they are deplorable bottom feeders

Don't blame AmEx for the FICO credit formula.

Im not blaming amex for the FICO credit formula. Im blaming amex for their shitty business practices and horrible customer service. It is because of this that i closed my card. the op was considering closing her card so i wanted to make her aware of the potential impact of closing her amex. lets work on our reading comprehension skills, shant we?

I agree. Something about this story is not making sense.

Sorry it wasn't that the fee was assessed May 25 and I paid May 27, it was they reported it as a delinquency May 25, I was notified by my credit monitoring service, and I paid it immediately after. It was apparently due in April, and the delinquency was reported in May.

Here's the thing: you have a contract with AMEX. You've obviously had this card for a while and you know you have an annual fee. This isn't something new.

Part of having good credit is reading and reviewing statements , hopefully you learned something.

They assessed the fee on May 25. I paid the bill about 2 days later (immediately got a notification of a credit score change and paid it), and called today.

This doesn't make any sense. A derogatory item on a credit report would, at its earliest, be 30 days late.

But when was it originally due?

It sounds like you were more than 30 days late.

OP here. Yes, I think it was between 30-60 days. I didn't get any bills from Am Ex, but it was my negligence not to look online. But it was because I don't ever use the card and haven't used it in a full year. I understand I have to pay my bills. But this wasn't me forgetting to pay my credit card that I use. It was an annual fee from the card itself. It seems a little like extortion. This was their annual fee for NEXT year. If I didn't pay it, cancel my damn card. Don't report it to a credit agency and then refuse to remove the report after it has been resolved. This is their fee for me to continue to be their customer. If I haven't paid it, it seems Draconian to destroy my credit score, no?

Anyway, I'm reporting it to the BBB. I know I'm ultimately at fault -- my issue is that my fault was very small (it was $125 annual fee, for goodness sake) and their reaction was very large.

Since you know it was your fault, why would you report it to the BBB?

Take some responsibility for yourself. You sound entitled.

As David Ramsay says, that $125 was the stupid tax you paid for not paying attention. Time to put on your big boy pants.

Because it is my outlet for resolution. I fully explain what happened to the BBB, and I"ll wait to hear from Am Ex.
I think it's an unfair practice. An unfair billing practice. I have a right to feel that way, I think. They can decide to remove the delinquency or not.

Honestly, if your mom told you about this, would you be saying, "It's your fault. Take some responsibility. You sound entitled." You would probably say, "I can't believe a stupid $125 resulted in your credit score dropping 75!"

I don't think complaining to the BBB is going to do much good. You are in the wrong.

My Mom would tell me that I fucked up and should pay the consequences. I think we just identified your character defect. You were raised wrong, obviously.

I would say, "Sorry Mom, that is part of the membership agreement. Would you like me to take over your bill paying?"

File an appeal with the credit bureau. If you point out that you ham not used the card in x months, and therefore were not expecting a statement, perhaps they will expunge it.

Anonymous
That just sounds really weird. I had AMEX for years and I've loved their policies. they have taken erroneous charges off my bill With very few questions. Every time I called AMEX i get the best customer service. So something just sounds kind of fishy to me.

Doesn't work that way. It's unfortunate that so many people are still operating off of erroneous myths when it comes to credit scores and reporting. They report accurate information. It hurts like hell when a derog hits, but if it's your fault there's only a few avenues of recourse and none are guaranteed.

I get the best customer service with Amex too. I was in Paris and my card was electronically stolen and used to buy tickets from Germany to Beirut. Amex called me immediately and a had a new card the next day. I couldn't be happier with the service.

I detect fishy-ness as well.
